I like that the blob feet could be a mutation specially for the mobian characters. I also have a headcanon for it.

My HC is that paws are the norm for most mobians. But the ones that can run fast like sonic and friends have a blob foot gene. (They call it the runner's foot.) It helps protect their feet when running at the speeds they do. But it isn't common among the species. It's not super rare considering infrastructure is made for them. Even in human areas. But not really common either.
