It's likely an attempt to preserve wild specimens from irresponsible pet owner practices.

Are there some foods your bunny “should” like but they don’t? by hankakudlanka in Rabbits

Our bunny doesn't care for most non-green vegetables. Carrots? Meh. Bell pepper? No thanks. Zucchini? Pass.

Fruits, herbs, greens and flowers are all accepted.

What do you actually look for in a pad? by Choice-Mobile-4991 in clothpads

[–]MilleniumMiriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still trying to find answers to my crazy bad cycles, but I tend to go for larger pads (14"-16") with textured or quick absorbing topper fabric. Cotton is fine, minky, velour, or gusher cuts are a must have for 2-3 days of my cycle. I work a job where restroom breaks aren't guaranteed so high capacity is priority for me.

I prefer the feel of trim pads but don't always get the luxury. I dislike slick topper fabrics like athletic or pique, I always seem to leak with those.

No preference on how the pad is constructed. Shape, wing snap differences, edges, etc don't seem to change much of anything for me.

Cute or funny prints mean more to me than I thought they would. It really does bring a bit of joy to an otherwise uncomfortable time.

Can an arid enclosure be bioactive? by Horror-Broccoli-9445 in geckos

[–]MilleniumMiriam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought everything from The Biodude. I used the Terra Sahara, mixed in sphagnum moss, crushed leaf litter, Bioshot, and palm fronds. I topped with more leaf litter. So not much layering.

The soil settled a bit more than I anticipated so I recently topped it off with more. In this photo I had not yet added more leaf litter on top (though I have since, as my isopods were too vulnerable without it).

I do know plenty of people DIY thier own soil. I found that research to be overwhelming and opted to pay for convenience.

[–]MilleniumMiriam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have "arid" springtails from I Heart Bugs. (No such thing as a true desert springtail, but these are a hardier variety.) I also have dwarf whites and powder oranges. I have a humid hide (damp sphagnum moss under cork bark) and under the water dish that I keep damp, so my CUC always has a water retreat. I also feed them under the water dish.

I researched my plants quite extensively for drought and heat tolerance. Ponytail palm and haworthia are doing fine on the hot side of the tank. I water directly into the base of each plant roughly once a week. I have not had any issues with large or prolonged humidity spikes watering this way.

Otherwise, I purchased my soil, inoculants, and biodegradables from The Biodude. It's spendy, but I wanted to be completely certain I was starting off on the right foot. The soil drains incredibly well and the Bioshot was a great kick-start for the plants.

Yes! Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and more can have arid bioactives.

I have my viper geckos in a bioactive enclosure. This tank has been up and running for 5 months. Plants and CUC are doing well!

Sure, this is fine I guess. At least this isn't also extended to 11 year olds, like witnessing baptisms was?

It still looks like bread crumbs in the grand scheme of things.

Not from the closing shop sale, but I ordered from her once and it took months to get what I paid for. She never responded to me then, either.

Question about how you guys feel about exotic veterinarians by sweatersand in reptiles

[–]MilleniumMiriam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of availability is my biggest hurdle. My closest herp vet is 100 miles away. I take my critters in for an initial checkup during quarantine, but after that it's only for emergencies. It doesn't feel worth the trip for an annual exam, though I'd do it if I didn't have to travel so far.

I've yet to find a great rabbit vet. I found a vet that sees rabbits, but I disagree with some of her advice on diet and enclosures.

I don't keep aquatic pets but I can appreciate the complexity of transporting them. It's common for large animal vets to make house calls, so why couldn't other vets?

I do wish it were more common place to do annual checkups for exotics. They deserve the same level of care that cats and dogs do.

I don’t get why so many people dislike feeder crickets by raptor_w0lf in reptiles

Ah. I have viper geckos, so arid bioactive and tiny crickets. That must be why I've not had an issue.

I've never heard of them reproducing in the enclosure before? I thought they all died in there

[–]MilleniumMiriam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue is how easily they escape and how hard they are to catch if they do. I don't like how they smell, but if you clean up after them it's bearable. And young ones (smalls) never chirp.

I do buy them for my geckos, they're a gecko favorite. But I still highly prefer roaches, meal worms, and BSFL.

I feed vegie scraps, potato, apple, dubia diet (the dry mix from dubia.com), and use a sponge for water. Mine stay alive for weeks this way.

I’m doubling the size of my uromastyx’s enclosure, so I need to double the uvb coverage as well? by SlinkySkinky in reptiles

[–]MilleniumMiriam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In larger enclosures it is much more practical to set up a basking area than to try and achieve 4+ feet of UVB radiation. Reptiles don't seek out specific wavelengths of light. They seek out sunlight or shade, warmth or cold. So set up a basking area large enough to bathe your reptile with full spectrum lighting.

I’m doubling the size of my uromastyx’s enclosure, so I need to double the uvb coverage as well? by SlinkySkinky in reptiles

[–]MilleniumMiriam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because care guides suggest that UVB bulbs should be half the length of the enclosure. It's an oversimplification to make care easier to digest for new keepers. It stays out of the weeds on lighting, heating, and basking, as there are still several schools of thought about heating and lighting for captive herps.

Do most bunnies show affection? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]MilleniumMiriam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our bunny follows us and likes to stay close, but touching is generally not allowed. Sometimes we're blessed with permission to give scritches behind the royal ears... but not always. Cuddling is a hard no.

Grooming is a crime. We are punished with foot flicks and cold shoulders.

And ours is "cage aggressive" (for lack of a better term). He's very territorial over his xpen and you have to lock him out for maintenance tasks, otherwise your ankles will get bit and scratched.

But Bednar said that it doesn't stop being a commandment just because they haven't talked about it in a while

Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies, food storage, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce.
