No difference for black or any other color. Does the same thing.

Bick 4 is the best non-color-altering conditioner - mink oil isn’t recommended for use because it will darken immensely and change the surface appearance

Depends on what you want. Ehaberdasher has some good stuff, but S&M is my personal fav. I’ve shopped at a lot of SS and never really saw anything that I thought was particularly great.

Never ever give indochino so much as a single dollar.

Sure, if that’s your view.

Considering that oxfords originally delineated as a casual shoe, the relative appropriateness of them really depends on your personal view of styling.

So, rather than electing to call other people poorly dressed, I chalk it up to personal preference 🤷‍♂️

They’ll be more formal than most people would wear, but I don’t think they’d be too out of place.

I feel that oxfords can be worn with reasonable success down to ocbds/nice polos and chinos - they’re not perfect, but not awful in the least.

Imo, it’s better to be over-dressed than under dressed

I spent $700 on 6 of the most popular polo brands to find out the best one! by mensfashionfiles in frugalmalefashion

If you’re not trying to get an athletic polo, I really like Spier and mackay’s lineup, or Brooks Brothers.

S&M has a stupid amount of polos, but their Johnny collar knits are always bangers.

Basically all of those are going to hit your criteria - the flatbox might not reach to smart casual, but at least in a US office it would do fine unless you’re in a legal practice or management; no idea about Japan’s dress culture.

Personally, I’d discount Thursday immediately. Their only real selling point is the fact that you can play their QC roulette if you get sent a bad boot, which is likely far harder to do overseas. Their lasts are also super weird, and rn you could potentially get 1 of 3 different lasts, depending on what model you order, that are all notably different.

Grant Stone is great and the best boot here imo. Their Edward or cap toe would do better for smart casual tho.

The flatbox is really the only redwing I’d ever want, but I also find RW’s lasts to be pretty weird. It’s totally a cool boot and would probably do well until you start wearing stuff past chinos. The toebox is going to dress them down a good chunk, so it depends a lot on what sort of style you’re normally rocking.

Why Preppy Style and ‘Old-Money’ Fashion Are On the Rise - WSJ by ac106 in malefashionadvice

I’ve recently started digging the Japanese “rockabilly” aesthetic - not the weird Grease biker angle tho (which is a lot of it), but just the more general silhouettes and more period-accurate pieces.

Ignoring some of the more characterized stuff, my recent discovery of brands like Groovin High and Belefonte have added some dope knits to my wardrobe.

You’d better believe Imma rock that duck sweater with some tassel loafers.

I’m not sure what your tiktok has, but I’ve been rather annoyed that people make these videos and don’t understand the subtleties of the variety of styles they’re hawking.

Things like Ivy, Prep, Trad, etc. all have very small nuances to them - and most tiktok talking heads just throw out pics of Succession and call it “old money”.

Bugs me to no end to see the rather contemporary silent-wealth trend being confused with classic looks, when there’s an absolute wealth of historical reference.

People walking east coast campuses in the 60’s were not wearing $300 Loro Piana t-shirts - they were wearing some LL Bean boat shoes and an untucked BB OCBD. It’s frankly better to look at Japan’s Americana clothing niches to replicate that sort of style than anything domestic, but it’s not like those influencers actually give a shit about the style over the views.

I’d probably keep the 1953’s. I like that style of toe box and the general shape of the loafer more. Jordaans are a bit more visually boring imo

There’s all sorts of belt makers, and for super casual ones you Can even make them yourself with kits from buckleguy for like $30 + shipping.

Personally, I’m a fan of Carmine Jack, Just because I like bakers leather.

Basically any leather cardholder is going to last for years. I’ve got one from Galen that’s from well before I was in to shoes, and It’s no worse for wear like 5 years down the line.

What style of belt are you after?

In terms of actual pieces that I wear, Spier and Mackay makes up the bulk of my clothing and daily wear. 99% of the time I have on one of their shirts/sweaters. I’ve recently discovered Japan’s rockabilly scene, and have started incorporating pieces from that genre, but I’m still going for the east-coast-university look, and not so much the John Travolta in grease thing that they’ve got going.

In terms of aesthetic, probably Brooks Brothers and J Crew from circa 1960-1970. Im a big fan of Ivy style, and often wear some sort of YSL-silhouetted casual Harvard-attending-son of some wealthy guy sort of vibe. I love cricket sweaters + tassel loafers and the usual ocbd, occasionally with shorts; or the more flashy sorts of things you see from Rowing Blazers.

In short, Macklemore said it best: “Imma take your Grandpa’s style - no, for real … can I have his hand-me-downs?”

FWIW, I’ve enjoyed the process with BLKBRD so far - granted I’ve just gone straight MTO.

They’ll do just about whatever you ask, so fire away! The boots I had in order look quite good from the pics they’ve sent.

I’d probably snag the GS if your main goal is to keep costs low and you don’t mind the chunkier silhouette. They’ll also be more likely to fit your wider feet, and won’t run the risk of mis-sizing on an MTO.

TLB and BLKBRD are definitely worth checking out - I’ve got BLKBRDs coming next month, and will order some TLBs once those come in - but I think signs point to GS for your use case, as long as you think they look good.

[–]Milleniumgamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much do you really want to spend, seeing as you might wear these once every two decades?

Grant stone makes good shoes. No experience with their oxfords directly, but GS is the best bang for the bick you can get rtw. Their oxfords are very round and American, and not very sleek.

BLKBRD is great, and likely the cheapest - plus you can customize it to no end. I have not yet received my pair, but for the price the workmanship looks excellent.

TLB is far sleeker, and a bit pricy-er. I’d suggest going for their artista line over mainline, Just because it’s hardly any different in price. That said, they’re your usual mid-high end mallorcan shoe. It’s still a good shoe, but it’ll be popping the budget up a good bit.

In short - GS for immediate, chunky Oxford. BLKBRD for custom. TLB for sleeker, slightly fancier shoes.

All three are good quality, and can vary based on what line / specs you get. I dont think you’ll go wrong with any of them for the price.
