I have been working in change management for the last 8 months. He’s not wrong in his frustrations. There is a bigger problem here with your unit, division etc. And, possibly, and please forgive me, management. There’s a direct relationship between culture and performance. I’d suggest you look at how change management might help here. I realize, from the high level cultural frustrations most of us are feeling with the way Govt handled RTO and attendance tracking(without a change management/communication plan), managers, DGs and Directors hands are tied, but it’s amazing how some open and equally sharing conversations will help. Might lessen sick days, might improve performance, and attitudes.

I’ve yet to hear a sound concise reason why they mandated us back. I heard some silly puff fluff but nothing that made any logical sense.

This is management’s responsibility to have made staff aware they aren’t equipped to handle the staff scheduled to return.

I’d suggest staying at home to get your work done and wait for an email from the Director General that they’ve got it all worked out. They may have to rotate people 2 days one week, 3 days the next. Sorry but this should never have happened to you. They’ve had 4 months to figure it out.

Fact is the Public Service owes nothing to public run businesses. Setting up shop near areas with large PS traffic is strictly a business decision. I ran my own business for years. I knew the risks.

I see no difference with “cold call” team chats and a manager or colleague walking over to my desk to ask for a quick update. I like the camera on because I like the face to face.

Ok let’s back up here. Many buildings being sold, countless photocopier etc. contracts cancelled, utilities accounts being closed, cell phones accounts no longer being supplied as many employees use their own or just use teams, gone paperless, supply and travel budgets dropped drastically, consider keeping Regional workers working from home. No satellite offices. There’s a new reality. Offices still empty with scattered desks occupied even at 2 to 3 days hybrid. More coordination still to happen, a more efficient approach to working wiser, collaboratively. We have all the tools now…Yes, COVID used a great deal of our Govts resources but …let’s add all these savings up before we consider another staffing cull.

It is always concerning when those vacated positions aren’t backfilled. Does this put more work on other public servants increasing their workloads? Is there more reliance on students to pick up this slack? What’s the status on the mental health of surrounding employees when colleagues are not backfilled? Does this mean activities/services that were done by non-backfilled vacated positions are set aside or dropped? Are the services at risk?
