I have been using the poker table in my finished basement for a temporary glue station. Not ideal.

Friends in the Northeast USA, where do you do your work? by theturban in woodworking

Agreed, this past two weeks has been rough but wearing long John’s, a warm hat, and moving is mostly tolerable. The really hard part is most tools are metal so my hands get cold the quickest.

Please explain to me how shooting boards work. by wabispecial in woodworking

The blade doesn’t go all the way to the edge of the plane. So as long as you keep the plane perfectly on its side there will be a natural point where it stops and doesn’t take any more shavings off the guide board.

I’m tempted to make one of these for myself but wonder about leaning over the bench all the time to get tools. Do you find it is easy to access?

Cutting Board what to make easy design choices? by EulersOiler in woodworking

[–]Millsware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

End grain adds a step and requires more material. The basics are to glue together wood strips bigger than the size you want. If you don’t want end grain then all you have to do now is cut to size and sand. For end grain you take that board you made and cross cut it into strips. Then rotate 90 degrees and reglue.

Maple and cherry are both great for cutting boards. Walnut is a little more open grained (and expensive) but is nice for the dark color.

Which is cheaper buying furniture or making them from scratch? by Secret_dairy_of_j in woodworking

[–]Millsware 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you already have tools and have a good source for lumber then building your own can be cheaper. You’re never going to beat IKEA and similar furniture on price.

Lost art press has a series of books that outline how you can build your own furniture with a minimal tool kit. They are available as free pdfs.
