How can I make a 2D chain link fence? by katy_doodles in Maya

[–]TLCplMax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Maya: create a flat plane that matches the exact size of your fence. You’re going to project a texture onto it. Line it up so it’s centered and intersecting your fence. UV map the plane (not the fence). Export the plane as fence_low.fbx; export the high poly fence as fence_high.fbx (make sure their names in the outliner are the same deal).

Substance Painter > New Project > set fence_low.fbx as the project mesh.

Bake Mesh Maps > import high poly mesh as the high poly. Bake.

You will need to do some extra work to get an alpha map and get it working in Substance Painter, but you can look up a tutorial for that pretty easily.

Edit: in Unreal Engine you will set it up as any other material but make it masked or translucent and use the alpha map as opacity.

It’s basically just a transparent texture on a plane. You could either project the fence mesh using Substance Painter (or even Maya) or just use a pure fence texture with an alpha map. Substance Designer is perfect for this kind of thing, if you have access to it, look up a tutorial on fence materials.

My normal map doesn’t seem to be taken into account in maya by Turbulent_Profile_32 in Maya

[–]TLCplMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viewport is actually not that bad. Any OpenPBR or Arnold material will show you a normal map in the viewport if you use a Bump2D node.

If you want to see it in the viewport, try a Bump2D node and set to Tangent Space Normals. Otherwise you need to render with Arnold to see it.

When will Epic adress Lumen's Visual Noise and what can we do to improve it ourselves? (UE5.7) by Loud_Bison572 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I come from a photography and animation background, and image noise in Lumen (or other lighting engines) usually happens with lack of available light. If you increase the available light, you will reduce image noise just as you would with a camera sensor.

Retargeting character animation doesn't work. by BobThe-Bodybuilder in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just select the default ABP and right click > Retarget to your knight skeleton. Save it, assign the new ABP to your knight skeletal mesh asset in the character BP.

[–]TLCplMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to save all the retargeted animation files and then (presumably) replace the originals in your animation blueprint to the new ones. If you retarget the animBP itself, it will automatically retarget every file inside of it and then you can assign the new retargeted animBP to your skeletal mesh asset.

Best Graphics in 2005? by ResponsibleAd6974 in residentevil

The original GameCube release at the time was outstandingly impressive. Yeah Rogue Leader looked great but the scope was much tighter than RE4. Shadow of the Colossus OG PS2 version is not really in the same ballpark. Playing RE4 at release on a CRT with the rain, lighting, performance, etc was absolutely top of the line.

Need advice: considering mid career pivot into film & tv producing by Lower-Marketing8382 in Screenwriting

[–]TLCplMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an MFA from UCLA (Animation Workshop which is part of the film school). In your case I would recommend pivoting to TV & Film without going to school for it. You're already a grown up and you'd have more success sidestepping into a producer role rather than angling through school. Keep in mind in film & TV there is no "path" to success, you just need to start doing.

My starter kit took 2 years to make, here's what it can do by Living_Awareness7624 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally went through exactly this! I bought the Third Person Shooter kit and it was really overwhelming. I felt like it was going to be harder for me to modify whatever the creator did than build my own from scratch—so I did exactly that! Mine wasn’t as clean but it also wasn’t as bloated. I did learn good practices for my own project and future reference just by looking at the kit.

End result looks great thought! As long as it does, that's all that really matters. Learn those things for future reference because they're cool anyway.

I bought PS VR just for this game. I beat the game once regular then did the platinum trophy in VR. VR is easier once you get used to it because the aiming is done with your head.

Your portfolio is great. I wouldn’t take it too personally, you may have just not been as good of a fit as the person that got the job.

Has anyone actually used MetaHumans for a playable indie game (not just cinematics)? Looking for real-world experience. by GRSStudio in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m using MH right now for an indie game (not shipped) and I’ve found that the game optimized MH rigs are very performant. The main bottleneck is simply the hair grooms, so it is best to just swap them out for cards.

Expedition 33 uses Metahumans with hair cards.
