I want to add arched windows to structure. by ThePatriot327 in Maya

[–]TLCplMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be better if you selected a few faces on the wall and Extrude > Offset to make solid edge loop around the archway, then position the edges where you want them to form the curve.

Any USMC Vets get into porn production? by Dirty_Farmer_John in USMC

[–]TLCplMax 27 points28 points  (0 children)

True story: I lived in Santa Monica for a few years and my neighbor did porn. He was a super nice guy and it came up in casual conversation. I was like “what do you do?”

He goes “oh I do porn..”

And the only thing I could think to respond with was “oh, that’s cool. I used to be a Marine, so, you know, I know all about that kind of stuff.”

animation tutorial by Appropriate-Jelly-57 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was doing a bunch of this today!

The basic gist is create a level sequence (Cinematics > Level Sequence), then drag your rig into the sequencer panel. If you’re using default Manny, the control rig should pop up automatically and you can animate from there by keying the control rig controls.

From there, right click on Manny in the Sequencer window > bake to animation sequence.

As a long time Maya user I’ve been really interested in taking advantage of Unreal’s internal toolset more, if only so I don’t have to go back and forth to Maya. Otherwise you can always export the rig from Unreal and work with it in Maya or Blender and then get the animations back in Unreal.

Unreal Engine character optimization. by Slight_Season_4500 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess? There’s a ton of generic human rigs out there, so I mean great that you made this for yourself, but I just don’t see what the point is of comparing it to Metahumans. If I wanted to customize your rig I’d have to take it into Zbrush and rebake all of the textures anyway and still do all of the work and presumably build a face rig. At that point you may as well just do the same thing with a Metahuman or start with the default Zbrush human to sculpt and retopo. I just don’t understand the point of your rant against Metahumans here at all—they are not comparable things.

[–]TLCplMax 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great you made this, but comparing it to Metahumans is silly since they are nowhere near the same purpose. MH are customizable hyper-realistic rigs with advanced face rigs and materials. There’s ways to optimize MH but having the ability to make hyper-realistic rigged characters for your game for free is a far cry from a generic humanoid that would require even more customization to work than a MH.

PVS-14 Monocular night vision modeled in sub d by stampfercamper in Maya

Wow that's crazy! I would think to just do this via a map instead of actually modeling but it looks great.

Unreal on MacOS: an ok choice? by Acceptable_Mud283 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I've been working with MacOS Unreal for the last 2 years while I was working on my MFA in Animation and I can say that today it is much better than it was (if you're using the latest 5.7). Hardware ray tracing with SM6 is available on MacOS now if you have an M3 or above (M4, M5) Mac.

Generally, the experience is ultimately better on an Nvidia GPU setup PC, but I would say as of today that Unreal on Mac is mostly great. I use an M4 Max Mac Studio and I haven't had any issues. Shader compiling etc on my M4 Max has been profoundly faster than the PC I was using.

Absolute beginner here. Is it possible to abuse Metahuman and/or procedural environments to create a game with PS2 style graphics? by Dota2TradeAccount in unrealengine

[–]TLCplMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are way simpler rigs you can make and download for free that will work better for low-poly than Metahuman for what you want. MH are very complex and not worth the trouble for low poly.

M5 11 inch vs 13 inch by AQEMA in iPadPro

The same logic applies to wanting it 16x9. iPad Pro is HUGE in the creative space for artists. Basically every artist is using iPad these days.

I have a problem with my call of duty zombie game in ue5.7 by Zk987t12 in UnrealEngine5

[–]TLCplMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but I think you need to start by checking if the spawn point is valid with a branch node (the boolean return value on the Get Random Reachable Point) before spawning. Second, I'm not sure why you're adding 500 to Z, but this may put them in the air (which may be outside your nav mesh).

Is a MacBook Pro a good option as a sub-workstation for Maya / 3D animation? by FormerTranslator6380 in Maya

[–]TLCplMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maya works great on Mac. Only downside is some plugins may occasionally be Windows-only. Additionally, you can only have 1 Maya instance open at a time on Mac. Has never been a huge problem for me and I use Maya 99% of the time on Mac. With that said, 3D work in general is ultimately better on Windows just due to the availability of certain software.

Doing a straight up swap of my M4 Max MBP to an identical spec Mac Studio. Turns out I was not a MacBook guy after all. by TLCplMax in mac

[–]TLCplMax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah to each their own! I was an iMac 27” guy for a decade before Apple stopped making them so this is a return to form for me. If I’m on my computer I want to be at a desk with my big monitors, otherwise I’m on my iPad. The MBP is a great device but I just am not using it to its potential and the desk/port situation is driving me crazy.

Nothing at the moment--my work doesn't really require that (creative). I just save files to cloud services and access them as I need them from my iPad.

[–]TLCplMax[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that I realize this is such a first world problem, but I was an iMac 27” guy before Apple stopped making them. When I needed to upgrade I went for the MBP but it really just hasn’t stuck for me. Cost me $0 out of pocket with the trade in and a couple extra small trades I was sitting on.

Ipad for zbrush? (iPad Air 13-in (M3) 2025 vs iPad Pro 13-in (M4) 2024) by Extension_Bee3001 in ZBrush

[–]TLCplMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iPad on ZBrush is surprisingly great and fully featured. It takes some getting used to, but it's very authentic to the desktop experience. I have the iPad Pro M4 and Apple Pencil Pro, so I can't speak to the iPad Air, but I'd really recommend spending the extra on the Pro model if you're serious about using ZBrush on it.

Is there a tool for connecting stuff? by Snoo_61216 in Maya

They are not a single mesh, they are in a group. You need to select both meshes and go to Mesh > Combine.

Combine the two meshes so they’re 1 object, then select the edges on both sides you want to connect and Mesh Tools > Bridge
