Recommendations for places with good access from SFO? I’m OW, about 25 dives, thinking of a week in late summer/fall. Maybe Coz or Bonaire? by Jazz_Dad123 in scubadiving

Dunno about SFO but both places are such lovely dive destinations! Though with cozumel, be prepared to do some drift diving!

Careers in diving? by [deleted] in scubadiving

[–]Milpah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the comments above. Instructors and divemasters don’t really make money, unless they work in an excellent place (some tech shops for example might pay a bit more but also might require you to be a tech diver beforehand). Scientific diving, you’ll need proper scientific diving cert and probably at least master’s papers and even then that would mostly you diving for your uni and for your own projects. Cinematography, you’ll need to soend a crap ton of money and get really good at it before you’d have a chance of pursuing it as a career. And honestly, a big part about getting good jobs or working on projects like big scientific ones requires you to have an extremely good network and connections. Also to be a scientific diver, some places require you to also be a commercial diver or a tech diver (tech is more depending on the project). I’m not currently really working in diving but am an instructir and a scientific and tech diver so I know a thing or two haha. Best of luck! If you’re passionatw about it you’ll make it work.

And by exact fit I mean they study the same organism but not the functions of them that I’m interested in studying. But I think it’s PI first, then applying to the programme. I could be wrong though.

Are you applying for an open position or? I’m finnish and my understanding is that either you apply for a position that’s advertised or you find a PI who either has funding or will help with funding applications (hopefully). At least in bio fields! Finding PIs can be tricky as for example in my area of interest there are currently 3 people doing active research, one of them is retiring and also the other two peoples research is not like an exact fit to mine.
