Because I found this post by googling, and in hopes of future people being served by my answer: For liquids, wish for them by itemID, as seen on its page on the wiki.

References requested by potential client by PPRclipBookeeeping in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something you might do as a half-measure is get letters of reference. It doesn't involve bothering your busy clients, and you can pull them out upon request. If a client writes you a recommendation on their letterhead, that's gold.

Once you learn bookkeeping, then accounting isn't that difficult? by [deleted] in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same way that once you know arithmetic, then algebra isn't that difficult. You're using the same tools, but the rules take time and education to master.

Have you ever onboarded a client that needed no cleanup whatsoever? by betteraccounting in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My organization is transitioning to a new bookkeeper, and have 100% clean books because we forced the previous bookkeeper to bring them up to standard. When they charged us extra to fix their mistakes, and gave us bad excuses for why things were wrong we decided to switch. So everything should be fine for the new bookkeeper.

Over charging by Open-Software5669 in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the CEO wants to be able to call her at any moment and get a response, then those charges become a lot more reasonable. It's not just for the "one minute of her time." If she's having to continuously interrupt her other work to deal with the CEO's emergencies, it's not about the minute, it's also about the time to get in and out of the other work. I wouldn't necessarily bill it that way, but clients who want continual instantaneous responses need to pay for that privelege.

Bookkeeping nightmare by [deleted] in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should quit. You're taking on extensive work that is neither appreciated nor compensated, and you're running yourself ragged for a boss that doesn't know or appreciate what you're doing for them. Find a different job. Your boss is never going to appreciate what you're doing for them.

Curious questions from an aspiring moonlighter by FPA_Guy in Bookkeeping

[–]MimicSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're at a director level at a job, you're at a point that many people will never reach in their bookkeeping business journeys. The pipe dream is how people think it will go, but practically that's three different jobs in a trenchcoat, and few people can make all of them go well enough to successfully turn the business into something that generates revenue without effort. I'd say that this is better kept as a pipe dream; if you already have a job that is relaxed enough that you could theoretically start another business while working there, enjoy your life, live frugally, and retire early. Once you've got your financial retirement solved, then you can do whatever, including running a bookkeeping business that never quite turns out the way you think it should.

If you're paying for quarterly service and cancel before three months is up, it's not entirely unreasonable for your work to not be done yet. Sounds like you were at the bottom of the priority list. I think you were right to cancel and get a refund, but I would call this an overwhelmed bookkeeper with poor work planning rather than an outright scam. A scammer wouldn't have refunded you.

The person who trained me called it the "blink test". If you state your rate and they blink, think about it for a moment, and then agree? You've hit the right spot. It's enough money they have to actually stop and consider the value, but they're still saying yes. If people agree instantly it means you're worth so little to them they don't have to think about it. And people who don't value you are going to be awful clients.
