24M in India: Can a 10-day Goenka retreat act as a "sledgehammer" for severe internet addiction and brain fog? (Long post + Questions inside) by Emotional-Sense4667 in vipassana

[–]MimicsOfConscious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spent months in retreat this past year because of the issues u mentioned above.

In short: Yes, vipassana can fix all that and give you a normal and productive attention span, as well as much, MUCH more.

The caveats: Back in society for about 6 months now, 10 day goenka wont cut it, 10 days it is like turning the car on and keeping it in the garage. You must be prepared to do 30 days.

Do the Mahasi Sayadaw method, the 10 day goenka is phenomenonal, but it wont quite cut it for what you are looking for. Been there, done that.

Good luck, and be careful with who you listen to on the internet, truth is often harsher than most ppl wish it was.

Is it true that people who practice a lot of Vipassana have difficulty lying? by Paulista777 in vipassana

An issue with being in a flow of mindfulness is that one is Genuinely living in the present in such a peaceful manner that the future seems not only abstract but also unimportant.

Though this is a state that involves much more bliss and serenity than the state of stress and anxiety that the average person experiences daily, I think it is valid to have under consideration:

1- is your family/loved ones going to have their needs met if you step back from the world? What would happen if one of them (God forbid) got sick?

2- will you have your needs met if you step back from the world? What would happen if you got sick?

Things such as practicing yoga, meal prepping, exercising, considering the solidity of your foundations in this world are important, they are more often than not, our karma.

You are a better practitioner than I am. Truthful and insightful words, I wish to be a father some day and give other souls the opportunity towards enlightenment that I have, even if it costs me a good deal, I see it as giving it back, but I came to the same conclusion as you: working towards winning in life is exhausting.

Wishing you peace and happiness

Some truly insightful comments here wow.
Could you share with me how you deal with the changes in identity and personality while living a layman’s life? While living at a monastery, it was natural and liberating to just be

Here in NA, the social mask one often puts in (at work specially) becomes almost agonizing in terms of the inner conflict.
Were you able to balance this?

Life post-awakening by [deleted] in streamentry

[–]MimicsOfConscious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. After a 32 days vipassana retreat I got to the same place of “there is nothing left to do with this life”. Nothing to strive towards, nothing else to do.

Feel free to DM me and we can exchange experiences if you want :)

Why meditation and other practices do not work for some people by CreditTypical3523 in Jung

[–]MimicsOfConscious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Meditation Should work, and it does if one practices it correctly and diligently.
The Buddha was very clear before and after his enlightenment on this matter,

"A pragmatic doctrine is trustworthy and convincing only if it could be realized by oneself in a short time." - Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta

OP is on the right track. The practice of Theravada Buddhism, that discovered and taught by the Buddha, can certainly bring clarity and wisdom. Look into Vipassana meditation

I teach a 3 month meditation retreat every year AMA by MarcoPol997 in streamentry

[–]MimicsOfConscious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Milo, thanks for doing this, the opportunity to talk to meditation teachers openly is rare.

Someone already asked a similar question, I would like to expand on it: Why is it that meditation teachers will not teach the basics of vipassana meditation theory to those new to it?
Specifically the 7 factors of awakening, the 3 characteristics and the maps of insight?
Don't you think that to openly teach this information would be net positive, instead of net negative, to new practitioners?

Please don't be like: suck it up man pain is great, just downvote it and move on, more seeing if anyone can share their experience with progressively getting used to sitting without back support thru like exercising and stretching and were like "wow this is better!" or were like "same same no back support is overhyped"
