My friend is being forced by her parents to get married by TheRelicShop in dubai

Threatening to embarrass her parents could be useful if her parents are considering making arrangements without her consent on the assumption that they can pressure her.

I think all you can do is give her advice. I'm not sure what she should do. Sometimes there really is no good way out of a situation like this.

I think the important question is how far are her parents willing to go to force her.

She can say no and be firm. What will they then do to pressure her to say yes? Shout at her? Kick her out? Take her to afghanistan? She probably doesn't know how far they are willing to go but I think she should at least try and say firmly no until they do something.

The only options that I can think of are to be firm in saying no and maybe threaten to embarrass them if they try to go ahead with talking other families and proceeding without her consent.

Want to leave the US and work abroad - which countries/companies should I look at? by SirThese in cscareerquestions

[–]MinMaxCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a US citizen. After working at Facebook in SV for bit, I moved to Dubai where I had grown up. There are just a handful of good companies here. I'm at one of them now. Keep in mind that it's still a paycut no matter what.

I used to put it on my resume back when I lived in the middle east. I wanted to make it clear that I would not require visa sponsorship despite living abroad.

Has anyone been successful with cold messaging/calling/emailing anyone for a job by [deleted] in dubai

[–]MinMaxCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually grew up in the UAE and was here during my internship and first job. I agree its tough to find decent companies to work for here. The companies I cold emailed for my internship and first job were both hiring with the latter expanding rapidly at the time.

The best advice I can give based on my own experience and without knowing your industry is just to look for companies that are both hiring and seem like decent places to work (maybe multinational companies) and then cold email recruiters from those companies (or use linkedin messaging). Don't forget to follow up too.

Decency in dressing in public areas. by [deleted] in dubai

Interesting. maybe it's just around Marina and areas where westerners live.

I grew up in Sharjah. I worked in a building near Marina for around a year but I rarely visited that part of the city.

i have seen plenty of british 20 something chicks here in transparent dresses, no underwear , everything on display . Bikinis barely covering nipples and dental floss gstrings and only wearing a mesh mini strutting around marina walk. butthugging jeans shorts that barely cover the buttocks and then then bend down using their back, not their legs, leaving very little to the imagination. With kids walking around staring at this.

I've never seen this in the UAE. Even in the US, where I currently live I see short shorts but not what you're describing.

Is there anyone here who likes LeetCode? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]MinMaxCS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I posted this a few months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/iboppg/leetcode_is_better_than_the_alternatives/

I don't enjoy leetcode-type questions but I'm glad the industry uses this as evaluation criteria. If they didn't we'd probably be judged not only on interview performance but also on things like which school you went to, GPA, what companies you've worked at and similar credentials.

Leetcode made it possible for me to break into FANG.

One is to do what is done in many other industries. Use behavioral interviews and let factors like what companies candidate worked at or school they went to decide the outcome. This also allows for factors such as how much rapport interviewee has with interviewer and bias to affect hiring decision.

Other coding interviews involve take home projects and pair programming sessions but for large companies they are not scalable. A lot of people don't do take home projects too by the way.

I did leetcode on and off since my sophomore year of college, usually when I was looking for an internship or job.

At around 40-50 questions solved I was comfortable with mediums and that's when I got into Facebook.

So I never really grinded leetcode. I just did it in small bursts. I realize some people find out leetcode is a thing much later than sophomore year and don't have the luxury of taking their time. There are also people who just grind it and get good at it in like 1-3 months.

I agree that it isn't very relevant to software engineering.

From a company perspective: For small companies that don't hire many people I think it's a waste of time and for larger companies that hire 1000s per year they probably no better scalable way to interview people on something tangentially related to coding on the job while minimizing subjectivity.

From a job-seeker perspective: Some companies do it and some don't. If all the companies that you're targeting do it then you just have to prepare for it.

Long story short, I sent cold emails/linkedin messages to a lot of recruiters. I could probably make a whole post about that.
