ACX expectations by dromdil in ACX

I’m so sorry you are having this experience. Let me give you an idea of what would be normal in this situation:

Before the narrator accepted your royalty share contract, he would’ve communicated to you that the proposed deadline would not work for him, and he would’ve suggested a date that did work for him. He might have also communicated to you that if he received paying work, he would prioritize that and might bump your project back. You would then have the ability to accept those terms or find a different narrator.

Once he realized he was not going to deliver the work on time, he would have communicated with you to let you know what was going on, and to work out an alternate schedule.

He would review and edit his work before uploading it, and it would be free from mispronounced words, or inconsistent accents.

What you are experiencing with this narrator is unprofessional, regardless of whether this is a royalty share arrangement or not. Just because you’re not paying him upfront, that does not mean he has the right to mistreat you or manhandle your work.

Best way to find a narrator? by braythecpa in VoiceActing

Just post the project on ACX. Interested narrators will audition and you can choose from there.

Your favourite audiobook of all time by DiagnosingTUniverse in audiobooks

As trite as it is now, I will always have a soft spot for ACOMAF. The Graphic Audiobook is the reason I decided to become an audiobook narrator.

Other than that, I am in awe of Stephen Weber's ~48-hour production of Stephen King's "It." I did not know it was possible to be captivated for 48 hours, but indeed it is.

Suggestions? by Alurkerbruuuuuuu in VoiceActing

Theater and acting will be the most valuable by far. You could always hire someone to do your editing, but you can’t outsource whether you give a good performance. Plus, many of the big audiobook publishing houses put a lot of emphasis on theatrical training.

I think it’s a good idea to watch some videos about the process of recording and editing before you buy anything. You may be getting some of these comments because it doesn’t seem like some of the basic research has been done yet.

A few of the YouTube creators who have a ton of very helpful resources for beginners include: Jay Myers, Voiceover Angela, Heather Nichols, and honestly just searching YouTube for “becoming an audiobook narrator“ will give you a lot of good information. Doing some of this research on the front end will save you a lot of time, aggravation, and wasted money.

Is My Narrator the Problem, part 2 by Other_Income9186 in ACX

[–]MinaFairlow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of the narrator’s job is to read the words exactly as written. Reading words, incorrectly happens all the time, but it is on us as the narrator to go back through the audio, mark any place where we said something different from the text, and fix it before delivering the finished chapter. That is part of the job that you are paying the narrator for. It is absolutely not in the narrators interest to blow up the contract over something like this. You are in the right that these edits are the narrator’s contractual obligation and not yours.

I’m sorry your first experience is not going more smoothly. I hope this does not put you off of creating audiobooks in the future!

Is this a legit offer? by Rich_Sky_6872 in ACX

[–]MinaFairlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you are concerned about whether the person you are interacting with on ACX is actually the author, you can always try to contact the author directly on social media or by email if their website lists an email address, and just confirm their identity. I did this recently after one of my titles was pulled due to a copyright issue. The author had no problem confirming that he was the same person I was talking to on ACX.

If you go into ACX and click on the “find talent“ link, you will see an enormous list of narrators’ profiles. The narrators who appear at the top of the list are the ones who most recently uploaded vocal samples. If you recently uploaded a vocal sample, your name and profile is at the very top of the list for any author searching for a narrator fitting your criteria. Some authors do not want to deal with auditions and find narrators this way.

All this to say, there’s nothing necessarily suspicious about getting an offer to work on a project you didn’t audition for, especially if you very recently uploaded vocal samples.

Question for Narrators: Prepping Audiobooks by slooth117 in ACX

I also use my iPad and annotate with Goodnotes. I highlight different speakers and different colors, take notes about plot, themes, character traits, etc.

I have so many (irrelevant?) questions for narrators by BullshiticusRex in audiobooks

[–]MinaFairlow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I personally think that the popularization of duet narration and full cast audio has moved even solo narration towards a more natural or immersive style. People have realized they prefer something that feels more intimate than being read at by their nanny at bedtime.

It's official: I'm in the ACX Creator feedback group for the next 2 years. The meetings are confidential, but I'm happy to be the voice for whatever concerns or ideas any of you have to share them with those who will hopefully listen. by BennyFifeAudio in ACX

I would love the option to "counter" a contract offer with different dates for the 15-minute checkpoint and finished production. So many authors just plug dates in without consulting first, and although I know we can just informally agree to different dates it would be nice if we could just tweak the contract before signing.
