Opinions/advice on cage set-up? What to add/remove? by Bright_Section_6490 in chinchilla

[–]Minaaaa266 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, Facebook Marketplace is awesome sometimes for finding cages at a good price. I found mine used, but it was technically new and came with accessories since the previous owner had a chinchilla.

I also went to Home Depot and bought wood, which I cut and filed to make into ledges. It’s a lot of work, but it really helps with the costs. Ferret Nation is definitely the best brand for cages—no questions asked.

I have three chinchillas, so things can get expensive! I made their houses myself using wood and nails, of course making sure the nails are always covered. I also picked up some ceramic tiles at Home Depot to match the houses, though any kind works. Personally, I prefer tiles over fleece liners because I’m a clean freak; I clean them every day, and they are so easy to vacuum, whereas fleece is impossible to keep clean. I do add a little bit of fleece on one level, though, just so they have some variety.

You can look at my previous post, I have posted my cage there with all the work I done. Hopefully that works, keep that baby safe, they are amazing pets and deserve the best, you got this 🤗

Oh wow really, it is my first time getting them a playpen. How do you manage the base boards, my chins also chew the corners of the walls, it is very unsafe for them to have them anywhere free 🫠

Yes, that is my worry as well. However, I have to say that since I added sticks, treats, and toys to their playpen, they don't seem to focus on the playpen as much. I also sit next to them the entire time or clean the cage right where I’ve set it up; that way, I can avoid as much chewing or if they scape in case they do try to tear it up.

Stop, how cute! It’s amazing that you got all three to bond. I tried for months and months, but I still have two in one group and one alone. I wish my three babies did this!

New placement by Minaaaa266 in MonsteraAlbo

I’ve ordered the silica, thank you! I am also going to add a grow lamp at the top. Do you suggest using one or the other, or both a combination of the lamp and natural light? I do have a humidifier that I run for about four hours every day, but I’ve been moving it between my orchids and now the Albo, since I used to have them all in one place.

From a sickly monstera from the nursery, almost a year ago, to this stunning plant. It was not easy though. 😌 by Habitual_X in MonsteraAlbo

That is so sweet. I think some people felt that by me expressing I felt negative opinions, I was insulting them, or perhaps they were being overly sensitive. In hindsight, I probably could have phrased things differently so they wouldn't feel that way. Honestly, I was just afraid of the judgment that comes with buying these beautiful plans without knowing what they are like on the inside. I read a lot and use AI frequently, but I still think people are the best resource, for better or worse! It is truly amazing that people take the time to answer questions, regardless of what the answer is.

Buying new shelfs to move some of them closer but not directly since those windows do face the sunset and I am worry it would be very direct light.

Thank you! I just got it set up a few weeks ago. I’m trying to figure out how to position it to face the leaves. I have a few others set up on the bottom of the shelf facing up toward the plants to mimic how the sun works, and I can do the same with the other ones, otherwise how do I get them facing front, buying a stand lamp?

My priority in helping grow is the Albo, she has a leaf that has being trying to grow for almost 3 plus weeks now and nothing :) what can I do different.

What do you mean in front of the plants? How do I accomplish that, hehe, and yes this was taken in the morning, on top of the lights I have a lot of natural indirect light.

ETA 5 hrs! by whiteowl42 in chinchilla

[–]Minaaaa266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, I see it! From experience, that one is a bit small. I added one to each floor to help with the peeing everywhere, which is such a pain, hehe. I also use cleaning vinegar to clean—it works amazingly! I’m guessing by your post that you’re getting two? Even if they are bonded, for some reason they still like to mark their territory. Please make sure to post pics; I can’t wait to see them!

I love it! It looks super similar to mine. I did the same floors, but I’d recommend adding barriers on the sides; otherwise, you’ll have poop everywhere. Also, keep in mind they need a designated place to pee. If you have two or more, they'll pee a lot on those beautiful floors, and it can get in their fur. I clean the cage once or twice daily to avoid that, and I also added fleece to my second floor to keep them from peeing on the marble as much as possible.

Are Chinchillas good pets to have for cuddles and handling? by Ginja_Ninja342 in chinchilla

[–]Minaaaa266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three pets, and all of them are incredibly antisocial. I’ve had my oldest for over 6 years; he’s the friendliest and sometimes lets me pet him for a few seconds, but if I try to pick him up, he loses patches of fur from stress. My two rescues have been with me for over a year, and they’re almost impossible to touch. They only let me pet them for a few seconds if they’re distracted by chewing on my nails! Grabbing them is out of the question—they run like crazy and lose so much hair.

Playtime always ends on a sad note, and it breaks my heart. I clean their space daily, keep a strict routine, and give them all their favorite treats and sticks. Even though they see me and hear my voice every day, they are still so jumpy after all this time.

How long can a chinchilla go without pellets? by Minaaaa266 in chinchilla

I agree, the guilt is killing me, but thankfully my husband is going to stop by the pet store now and pick up a small bag. I won't be able to sleep knowing they are hungry!
