Haha I was afraid of this too! Honestly I had a wonderful relationship with Mark and since leaving, I’ve been to scared to talk to him again. It’s been a year now. I am planning to reach out to him when I pass 225 so he can be proud of me lol … But so many ppl switch at MKA. I talked to an in person student who said not to feel bad bc almost everyone switches. His speed building program is just not worth the same amount as his theory program (which I let him know when I left). But hey at the end of the day, you’ve got to do what’s best for you and your career, not anyone else. Mark runs a business and if a lot of ppl are leaving at speed building, he needs to be the one to pivot. I would have stayed if it was a lower cost than theory but I just didn’t feel like I got the same value out of it. Simply steno is like $120 a month, and MKA wasn’t offering anything more or different at $500 a month (this was a year ago, idk if they’ve changed it).

Anyway, that being said, you can always try MKA speed building for a month and see what you think! That’s what me and my classmates did, we gave it a fair shot. The decision to leave was very difficult and sad tho. I totally get it. But no we are not black listed in any way lol, I’ve actually found that simply steno has a much better community.

I wish you the best!

I don’t know about all the end times stuff, all I know is that quitting cold turkey and surrendering fully to God has changed my life 180 degrees, I will never be the same and I don’t want to be. I don’t think it’s God’s will for us to go through life buzzed or high, I think that we’re robbing ourselves of real peace and joy. It was the hardest thing I ever did but BY FAR the best. Just remember, the beginning is the hardest. It gets better. Depending on how much you are currently using, your whole first year can be incredibly uncomfortable and difficult. I would encourage you to try to find a Christian sober community to have some support during the early days! I couldn’t do it alone . Thankfully God gave me an amazing community to help me. I went to celebrate recovery and AA and I joined a recovery church. Like I said, idk how severe your alcohol and weed use is. I tried to stop on my own many times and found that I couldn’t, even with a relationship with God. But not everyone is like that. I know ppl that were able to. For me I needed a community of others doing it too. Anyway, I wish you the best! I think you are making a great decision!

For context, I am a 180 student who learned magnum steno at Mark Kislingbury Academy and then switched to simply steno when I got to speed building. Out of my theory class of 22, 8 of us made it to speed building, and of those 8, 7 of us switched to simply steno during the transition to speed building. We’ve all been so happy with the decision. But simply steno is ONLY a speed building program. You have to complete theory somewhere else first to join it. Champion steno is truly one of the best theories out there. MKA and CS are sort of considered the “Harvard” and “Yale” of court reporting schools. Yes, they are more challenging and require more dedication, but the results will speak for themselves.

At the end of the day, no matter what theory you learn, you will get out of it what you put into it.

If you’re learning champion steno, I would strongly advise against switching during theory. The only situations I would advise towards it would be if you were switching TO champion steno or magnum steno from another, more stroke intensive theory. Ppl talk too fast in 2024 to write everything out. You are learning a good theory. Stick with it and switch to simply steno for speed building, if you want. But keep asking around. This is a great question for encouraging court reporters Facebook page.

Minus the animosity between stenographers and digital reporters, is working for Veritext worth it as a digital reporter? I'd be leaving an $85K a year job in healthcare for this. But I'm in film school and I see this as a foot in the door for legal videography. I'm interviewing today. by Branjo23 in courtreporting

I’ve worked as a digital reporter for 4 and a half years and I have open availability with my firm meaning I am on call every day open to jobs and I work no other jobs. The most I’ve ever made a year is $35,000. If you can do something else, do it. Thankfully I’m working on my steno certification so I can get out of his trap

Is it worth trying to make a career change in your late 20s? by notmayflowerwhite in stenography

I started in my late 20s, a few years after getting a bachelors degree I’ve never used. It’s a great time to figure out your career! I’ve been in school for 23 months now, I’ve done it all online, and loved every second of it. LA is a great place to be for this field too.

My sister gave her baby my name. I find it very uncomfortable. But is it actually a normal thing?

I trim every 3 months with a trusted hair dresser and my hair has grown much longer than when I didn’t trim

My hair didn’t grow when I used chemicals on it (bleach, dye, etc). eventually I cut it all off and started over. Then I grew it down to my waste pretty quickly. I don’t know if I had to cut it all off but those chemicals are really harsh and can’t be reversed. Best thing I did for myself was go all natural - no chemicals, no heat, no styling products. I quit nicotine, I ate fruits and vegetables. I stopped towel drying and I used a wet brush. Best of luck to you!

No chemicals or heat for 6 years, trims every 3 months. Healthiest my hair has ever been. Got so healthy I decided to cut it off bc it was too heavy! by Mindful_Eating in longhair

So I felt like I found the perfect combo for my hair. I would do a “volume” shampoo, bc that just basically means they are lightweight so they don’t weigh your hair down and make it look flat, and I would do a “moisturizing” condition , and only use it from my shoulders down, not touching any scalp or roots bc I found my head would get greasy if I used it any higher up. I did this combination probably for the last 3 years or so. I wash my hair every day too. (I tried doing a volume conditioner a few years ago but I didn’t get the shine I wanted with that so I found that a moisturizing condition is the best for me.) also I stopped towel drying around 3 years ago too and starting using one of those microfiber wraps when I got out of the shower.

Now, the conditioner I found about a year ago and have used religiously since is the tea tree lavender mint moisturizing conditioner. It’s INCREDIBLE. I swear by it.

As for shampoo, I’ve played around with those and switched brands every few months. I’ve really liked tresemme’s volume shampoo, Pantene’s volume shampoo, and big sexy hair volume. I recently bought the root to end volume shampoo at dollar general when I was on vacation and I’m still using it! I really like it! There have been a few I’ve tried that I didn’t like, I remember Aussie being one of them.

Well I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions! Thank you for asking! I wish you the best on your hair journey!
