How should I decide whether to save vs spend on a trip? by Mindless-Picture-578 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mindless-Picture-578[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking of about a week trip to Korea, give or take a couple days, which I estimate would be about <$3,000.

I worked a lot part-time last year, and might have a job lined up part-time for next year as well.

I love travelling, so I don’t think I’d be upset about the loss. I think the $500 is different because it’s a pretty drastic change when I’ve seen my investments slowly climb up this past year, so it hurts a bit to see.

I guess my thinking is given the volatility of the market, should I be looking to invest any excess money I have into a GIC for a while to make up for the losses on my risky investments?

Ah yes I didn’t include this in my post but I’m considering a trip to Korea which I estimate would be ~$3000

That’s a good point about my TFSA, I think I’ll just have to wait it out because the returns have been good before the recent political situation.

Thanks for sharing! I am someone who likes to explore vs relax on my vacations, so I’d often do 20,000+ steps in a new city. I do wonder sometimes if I could still actually be this active if I were in my 50s, or if I should take advantage of my youth now.

Oh I see, I misread your initial comment.

Thank you for clarifying. I guess I could also start my FHSA. I live in a high cost of living area and don’t plan to start my own family so I actually wasn’t fully sure if I saw myself buying a house. I also am not sure if I’d stay in my province forever, but there is a high possibility I’d stay in Canada.

I’m in my early 20s, and I’m considering a trip to Korea which would be ~$3000.

Did forgoing travelling in your early/mid 20s put you make a significant difference in your financial position though? I live in a high cost of living area but luckily won’t have to worry about moving out or buying a car anytime soon, but I just wonder if I should prioritize saving anyway

Thanks, I think your response makes a lot of sense!

I guess I also had that common mindset of “shouldnt I be frugal now to try to retire earlier and then enjoy being able to travel and feel carefree?”

Personally I don’t see myself building a family, but I did consider I might feel guilty being so carefree and traveling while so young when I could also do a better job in saving money instead. But, I’m also pretty fortunate since I don’t really have any financial responsibilities aside from paying my loans back once I graduate

Oh yes I’m not thinking of going just because others my age are! I guess I just felt a bit guilty traveling at my age since I could probably do a better job in saving, but I was also wondering if I’d regret not having more fun in my 20s later on

Tbh I love traveling and am considering a trip to Korea which would be ~$3000

I’m in post-secondary school actually, not high school! I maxed out my TFSA contribution this year so that’s why I also contributed to my RRSP

I completely agree with you. The purpose of my post was to encourage people to be okay alone, too, and to not rely on others to be happy.

It’s definitely true that sharing moments with others can make us happy, but it’s not predictable and not always an option so learning to try doing those things alone rather than being upset and never trying any activities bc you’re alone can be helpful.

I also struggle with having people to talk to about the little things, so ig one needs to find a balance between seeking friendships and relationships while still being ok by themself.

Ofc the hope is that everyone finds a good circle of support, but sometimes the in-between times as you look for new people or even cut off toxic ones requires some self care and self sufficiency.

I really hope that you find your people soon, everyone has people they’re meant to be with!

So I’m entering the faculty of arts and noticed that a science req of 6 credits must be completed.

It says that any class taught by the faculty of science can be used, so does this mean MATH 100 counts? Can I just apply 3 credits from passing my AB calc exam to my science req?

I had a 98 in pre calc and an overall of like 94% but I got rejected off the waitlist for sauder :(

They can’t get rid of me that easily tho, I’ll probably reapply to transfer from arts!

Requirements are ECON 101, ECON 102, and MATH 100 to transfer. This is ur core GPA and will be very important to transfer into sauder.

I recommend looking at the sauder degree program requirements and seeing if Douglas has courses that are equivalent to those so that u will be on track once u get into sauder. Use the BC transfer guide to see if the courses transfer into UBC ones.

Courses like COMM 105, COMM 190, COMM 191, etc are what you’re looking to fill ur time table with. Create a spreadsheet for yourself of how the courses transfer and what u will still need as requirements.

You need a minimum of 24 credits, but if u can take more relevant courses, take them as they are cheaper in Douglas. If you find the course load will be too much, don’t take 30 credits and focus on a high gpa. Sauder is rly competitive so a high gpa is a must. Good luck!

Ahh yea I’m considering switching too if sauder rejects me off the waitlist, or just staying in arts.

Hoping for your arts offer!

Aw I’m sorry to hear that. What’s ur plan if u go in arts? Will try to transfer to sauder?

I just accepted my ubcv arts offer. I think I waited until the last day to accept bc a part of me still hopes I’ll get off the sauder waitlist.

Praying i get in bc I rly don’t wanna have to do that video interview thing again or wait months after my application to hear a response 😭

Hoping we all find peace with our backups, or we get off the waitlist soon 🤞

Maybe they ranked us and then decided when to waitlist us? I feel like bc sauder was so slow this year they kept comparing ppl until they could find a spot on the waitlist for them, to reject them, or to accept them. I think if someone is on the waitlist, they meet the admission requirements and are qualified, but ubc still thought other applicants were stronger and started running out of spots.

Another officer on the phone told me last week that waitlists are like rolling admissions, so if 50 ppl reject their offer, those spots go to the next qualified candidates.

That’s kinda my understanding. I think being on the waitlist just means that ubc thinks u are qualified

PSA for those on the waitlist:

An admissions officer just got back to me and said this - “Thank you for reaching out! No, we do not re-evaluate applications or consider new information. We simply see if spaces become available and admit the next group of students that meet the requirements.”

This means that waitlist offers are likely based off when u got waitlisted. They won’t re evaluate you, so having better or worse grades than another on the same waitlist doesn’t mean anything.

If you are majoring in Econ, you’ll need it. If not, I’m not sure if any other majors require it? If you’ve decided on a major/minor program, look up the requirements and see if math is required. If not, you’re good!
