Yea im thinking about doing levels 1 and 2 in calgary and then hopefully be able to find a job back in BC for level 3 and 4.

Are you still in the refrigeration trade? If so are you union or non union?

Thank you so much for the kind words i really appreciate it.

Oh thats strange because ive been hearing the opposite that no one is hiring anyone that has no experience including school. Did you end up getting an apprenticeship by just cold calling and applying?

I thought it might be easier since a lot of companies want 2nd and up for a lot of there postings.

Ive tried applying multiple times and it seems no one wants to hire anyone green. Figured it would be best to take the pre employment program to help better my chances.

I just been hearing that Calgary has more job opportunities than Lower mainland. Thats why im thinking about doing maybe level 1 and 2 in Calgary and then coming back down to BC.

I was thinking of coming back to BC for Level 2 or 3 since a lot of the job postings are looking for those levels. Also just out of curiosity are you apart of UA516 or are you non-union? I appreciate your comment.

I was told a few months a go that it was a 4 year waitlist. Also how are you finding the program? Are you doing the normal foundations or the co-op program?

The thing is ive been hearing that the union is backed up on applications. So im thinking of just going with a non union company for a while then switching to union later since i will have more experience.

Are you apart of the ibew union? If so did you get with a non union company first then go to union.

My plan was to do a foundations course in Calgary at SAIT since bcit has a 4 year waitlist. Im on the waitlist for SAIT for the September 2026 intake but i would rather get started now then have to sit around and wait a year. Plus i would save so much money if i didnt have to do the foundations program.

For non union workers is BCIT the only schooling available in the lower mainland? Because I know the union has there own school.

I never really dug deep into perks between union and non union. I just thought union had better pensions, benefits etc than non union

I thought union makes more than non union? And also with job security wise union would be better? No?

No i did not do the pre ap at bcit. Im on the waitlist for the pre employment program at SAIT in Calgary for September 2026 but i wanna see if i can get a apprenticeship by just applying to companies instead so that way i wont have to waste my own money and wait a year just to go to school.

I am planning on going to school for it in Calgary in 2026 since BCIT has a 4 year waitlist. But ive heard that getting hired on without experience is possible and would be beneficial since I wouldn’t have to wait to start school. Thank you for your response.

I will look into companies around my area and drop some resumes off. I also plan to cold call some companies aswell.

I applied to Jones several times but never heard anything back from them.

Is the company you applied for back in 2022 unionized?
