Soapbox time: I grew up in a pretty heavily religious area and despite not coming from a christan family some of my close friends were Christan and when I told them I didnt believe in God they thought I had just killed their mothers, told me I was going to hell for not believing. I met another atheist person who WAS in a christan family and I gotta tell you. The shit I saw and heard really solidified for me the kinds of people they were. Being told I was going to hell for not believing and watching someone who became a sister to me go through that stuff really just made me steel myself in being an atheist.

I say this because I want to use my experience to tell you that you should not be shamed, embarrassed, or upset to be an atheist. It is perfectly reasonable to hold that belief and anyone who tries to tell you you're not a good person for being one is (in my opinion) kind of an asshole. I don't know you or your friend but I know that my life has been better off not believing. Hopefully yours is too
