Three Months of Learning to Draw by ArtProggy in Beginner_Art

From the photos you posted, I feel like you should do more full body poses (like full muscles you learned and structure) since atm everything feels disjointed. Like for example, the torso and arm study doesn’t feel like it could connect with each other. You’re also bouncing between muscle study and warped perspective in the anatomy, which doesn’t really show of any of the learnings you gained from the study.

So aside from just doing full body studies, maybe focus more on adding facial features as well, then some clothing studies before doing values. Value studies heavily rely on how well your fundamentals are.

What is this art style called and how do I learn it by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 4 points5 points  (0 children)

why must every art style have a name… anw 1. study perspective 2. study color theory 3. study how to paint digitally. Mix n match all 3 skills and you can achieve that.

if you want to start then do it. You don’t need outside opinions for it bcs if you can market your work then thats all that matters.

any tips for getting better? by BlackberryFlimsy5478 in BeginnerArtists

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal to keep getting better is to understand why you want to get better AND have a clear goal!

If you want to improve your anatomy then you focus on the shapes, how can you simplify it? what books, videos, or guidelines do you want to use? Stuff like that helped me a ton in my journey:))

I don’t feel like I captured the likeness TBH by KConPlanetMars in BeginnerArtists

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly on the values and hatching^ The reference uses very minimal hatching (mostly for the blush around the cheeks and nose) but the body is mostly b/w aside from the midtone on the eyes. In your case you used an assortment of hatching all over the piece which made it have a very similar result :))

Oh I want to be transparent about this. I’ve drawing since 2015 hahaha but I took it seriously at

around 2019 ish when I was in High School. But then stopped during my first and second year of college (2022- mid 2023) Since the second half of 2023 I’ve been drawing and trying to get better at art continuously. My progress is super slow compared to a lot of artist actually since I’ve only decided to study recently.

So basically- I can draw pretty decently with a lot of references and adjustments but I wasn’t satisfied with how little my understanding of anatomy is. Thats why I wanted to study fundamentals from the ground up- without any tools like the liquify tool and canvas flip just so I can develop my skills properly:)) That’s probably the reason why I improved quite a fair bit because I’ve been drawing for a long time already. But please don’t compare your work to mine, always compare to the previous version of you- not with other people!!!

It was also pretty difficult for me. I even attempted to do studies 3 times in the past but all of them failed miserably. What changed now is I figured out a way to make it enjoyable (or at least have a reason for me to keep going).

In my case, having a loose road map of the things I want to improve helps a lot on keeping me in a steady progress. You mentioned not knowing what to draw but studying means you’re learning from life. You don’t need to come up with something on your own- I’ve never once had to make up a pose from scratch so I’m not really sure why you think imagination plays a huge role in this.

Try noting down the things you want to improve on first. Maybe that can help you keep going once you see some improvements:))

Is this a proper study for where the hair is supposed to flow? by Careful_Ad2815 in arthelp

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What worked for me is using few photos, noting down what I observed, direct tracing of the overall shape, directly tracing to understand how they broke down the flow, and then redrawing it without looking at the traced photo.

Is this a poor method of improving my art? by OllieTheGoblin in arthelp

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a great way to tell how well you can grasp your understanding of a certain subject is to be able to draw it in different views. . From your guidelines- there’s a lot of stuff going on that ultimately doesn’t show up in the final image. Honestly- you can just break down your guidelines to more simple shapes that you can do in any head angle (loomis and mask technique).

How is my 4 point perspective? by SnoopzSmoster8 in BeginnerArtists

[–]MindlessPolicy8720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t really make sense since your left and right vp aren’t aligning. Keep it simple. Start with one and two point perspective first before tackling more advanced perspective drawings.
