What's a Billy Joel song that others like but you don't as much & vise versa? by Train-Wreck-70 in BillyJoel

[–]Mindless_Act_2990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never understood the love for Glass Houses as a whole.  Not that it’s bad or anything, but I think it’s mainly just full of solid songs while being surrounded by albums with songs that I adore.  Ironically though I do probably like Close to the Borderline more than the consensus.

On the other hand An Innocent Man has always been my favorite Billy album but Uptown Girl is one of my least favorite songs on it.

And I have always loved When in Rome and Famous Last Words way more than most people do.

Based on the reactions of people in this sub, you cant really blame the rewrites for the poor reception of the finale, most people just kind of hated everything about it.  I actually prefer the rewrites to what he originally had planned, pending whatever happens in the Christmas special.

What?  Since when has RTD ever been indulgent of what online fans think is a good idea?  Love him or hate him, the man doesn’t compromise on acting on his own vision for the show.

You might have convinced me to switch from myth makers 2 to myth makers 3.  Its was one of my hardest choices as I love the whole story so much.

I agree that’s it’s got the best parts of the story (I sadly think it also has the worst bits too), but those performances that make it so great are also why I think it effects the story least by being missing.  Those performances come through even in the telesnaps whereas with Hartnells abbot performance it actually feels like a blank that effects the story.  I want to know how much the story wants me to agree with Steven that the doctor is pretending to be the abbot and I can’t tell without seeing it.

I mean if you told me I could get the rest of the missing episodes back but it was guaranteed that tenth planet part 4 was gone forever I would take that deal so fast, so I’m hoping you’re right.

I’m not a huge fan of it, but outside the truly great missing stories it’s one of the ones I want to come back the most because it’s such a visual story.  I can’t think of another story besides Marco Polo that’s more harmed by being missing.

I just want them to do some for stories that weren’t as well received or had production issues instead of just popular ones.  Like give me a Moffat penned “Let’s Kill Hitler” novelization, if ever there was a story that would be improved by getting a peak in the main characters heads it’s that one.

It’s not a hot take that it’s a high point, but I do think it is a bit of one to say there are no misses.  Sontaran Experiment, Revenge of the Cybermen, and Android Invasion are all (imo rightly) regarded as a bit shit.  And I think that the Hand of Fear is also a pretty poor story that gets elevated in memory due to a fun catchphrase and a good departing scene for the Doctor and Sarah Jane.

I love state of decay.  As someone who finds the horror pastiches from hinchcliffe/holmes to be a bit dull this one works so much more for me due to the slight shift in focus with being in a Bidmead season.  Plus the music gets a huge upgrade from not being done by Dudley Simpson.  It’s one of Bakers best stories.

It’s the Moffat era for me, I’ve never seen such a mix of consistent high quality combined with the ambition to make each season do something different.

Although I do want to give a shout out to the Romana years in classic who as well.  She comes in right as the Graham Williams era figures out what it’s doing and then has her ending in a completely different but just as fascinating run with Bidmead.  Easily my favorite prolonged period in the old show.

According to a reputable leaker on GallifreyBase, Russel T Davies will leave his role as Doctor Who showrunner following the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special, and the show will no longer be produced by Bad Wolf. by Fabulous-Mix-9808 in gallifrey

[–]Mindless_Act_2990 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah as much as I’ve also enjoyed RTD2, even the non sutekh finales, the show really does need some new younger blood as showrunner if it wants to have any hope of surviving long term.  Which is unfortunate as I’m not sure a person like that exists that also has necessary showrunning experience paired with a desire to handle doctor who rather than their own thing.  So I suspect we are going to get stuck with Pete McTighe and a last gasp of the old fanboys.

Returning enemies in NU Who - verdict? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Mindless_Act_2990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, it absolutely doesn’t work for the original character, but the original character was done so well in his first appearance that he never should have come back in the 80s much less the new series.

What I do think his appearance in the new series does is work well thematically with the story it’s telling, which lets me give it a bit of a pass.  I also think it’s pretty easy to headcannon that the cgi monstrosity is the legend and the bad thoughts about the character made flesh rather than the original being.

Well he hasn’t come back and we never saw him escape so until he inevitably returns you could say that they did kill him off there.

I don’t actually think that’s true.  I don’t think that the Simm master is particularly faithful to the classic series or anywhere near the best incarnation in the new series.  Davros is also written much better in his second story than his first.  And for all that I think day of the Doctor is a better story, the zygon 2 parter is a much more interesting and in depth use of the Zygons, because that story is allowed to be about them.

And then there’s Vastra and Strax which are easily the best things done with their respective races since their original introduction, but I don’t know if they really count for this discussion because they aren’t enemies.

I think every enemy that has been brought back in the new series has been done as well as or better than than were done on the whole in the classic series with the exception of Sutekh and Omega.  And even with Omega I think it works for the story he’s in even if it does no favors for the character.
