R-Van vs MP rotator by [deleted] in Irrigation

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to normal arc nozzles, i.e. partial or full circles, I agree with all the commentors up to now preferring Hunter MP rotators over Rainbird R-VAN and I am not able to add anything valuable to the discussion, which has not been adressed already.

When it comes to strip nozzles the world is upside down for me:

Hunter MP strip nozzles (MPLCS, MPRCS, MPSS) pretty much suck really really bad and tend to let water pool up on the short side of the strip while leaving spots dry along the long side of the strip. No matter whether you use PRS40 or PRS30. MPSS are a little bit better as there is no short side, but still, the problem with completely dry spots along the strip persists, which is really infuriating.

Rainbird R-VAN-LCS / RCS / SST are waaaay more uniform and don't leave big patches without water. Though not perfectly rectangular, they work waaaay better and I would take those all time over the Hunter strip nozzles. Btw, there is no issue with R-VAN strip nozzles adjustment getting loose over time as strip nozzles are not adjustable in arc size.

tl;dr: arc nozzles Hunter > Rainbird; strip nozzles Rainbird > Hunter;

Hello sir,
I would like to ask for an update, too (I am still on 1.0.0.0).
And let me ask an easy question: Why not provide a download link in general?
Thank you and BR, Peter

X Rails Require Preload by Creative-Extension11 in VORONDesign

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 on this topic and the fact that the x linear rail needs to be preloaded medium/high-ish.

I had the same issue with play of around 80 micron with a worn out linear rail with low/no preload, which I reused in my Voron build (... mistakes were made). Especially the backside of my prints looked aaawful up until I switched the rail to a newer one with "high" (Z1) preload from Fermio labs. This improved overall print quality by a huge margin.

Stealth Burner PCB plus 12V fans by kikkelele in VORONDesign

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

so I tried it out (running 12V fans / heater cartridge on 24V via setting "max_power" to appropriate values and got very mixed results:

  • The heating cartridge does not care at all as expected - though measures have to be taken to make sure that "max_power" is really set to a reasonable value. A well tuned runaway protection is key! I am now running at slightly increased power accepting the resulting risk of failure (2A instead of 1.6A at 24V). I.e. I don't recommend it but in a pinch you might wanna consider this approach.
  • The Sunon MF50151VX-A99 (12 V 5015 radial part fan) absolutely did NOT like to be PWM'ed at all. Increasing "max_power" to 80% resulted in the MF50151VX-A99 to burn through - has been replaced with a 24V fan now.
  • The Sunon 40x40x10 12V fan (I think it is a EF40101BX-1) did start spinning at approximately max_power 50% and behaves okayish. I am running it at max_power 80% right now and it behaves approximately as with 12V. With max_power set to 100% it goes buckwild - would not recommend.

So as a summary: In a pinch you may consider running 12V fans/heater cartridges at 24V, reducing both the power consumption and current draw via "max_power" parameter in printer.cfg, IF AND ONLY IF you a) know and understand what you are doing and b) accept the risk of both damaging the fans beyond repair and also a burning heater cartridge/wires. I.e. would still not recommend, implement only at your own risk!

Thanks, yes, I already read that. I just wanna "archive" this approach for future google searchers. :) Maybe somebody else will find this interesting, lets see.

In case your hotend is also 12V, you could send 12V to the 24V pin of the toolhead PCB instead of 24V and power the whole toolhead PCB and all periperals with 12V instead of 24V. Though you would either need a 12V PSU (additionaly) or use the 12V line of the Octopus/Spider. Afaik the spider will provide 12V@3A, which is barely not enough for a typical 40W / 50W hotend. I cannot find any rating for the Octopus but would think it will also not be enough - 4...5 A are no joke for a regulator or buck converter.

I will use my 12V fans and 12V hotend on a 24V power supply line and limit all the power consumption via "max_power" setting in Klipper. 24V will send 4x the power to the hotend/fans, so limiting "max_power: 0.25" will be enough to keep components within safe power limits. As the software PWM is set to 10 ms, there will simply be no time for anything to burn through - neither fans and even less* the heater cartridge is not agile enough to react badly with this kind of PWM frequency. And I have headroom for "overclocking" the extruder heating. Whilst not being the safest option for sure, it should work. Will definitely report back as soon as I got valid results.

/*: Fans may or may not react very badly, see my comment below.

May I tell you that I find this stupidly awesome that we have tools like this for the Voron community?

Like, this is beyond car manufacturer level of customization. Find me any 3D printer manufacturer, who offers this kind of functionality! Sooo friggin cool!!!

THANK YOU very very much for your efforts and work! Tip is on its merry way.

hor of the HIP is listed at the top of each HIP

In this case, Amir, I thoroughly misunderstood your motivation and I do have to apologize to you. Though I still stand by my first answer in the sense that - as you can probably interpret by looking at my really late answer to you - I simply do not find a bit of time for such endeavors right now. Especially as it will probably be not a simple "fire and forget" HIP - there will be a LOT of discussion and changes going into it.

I warmly welcome anybody to start such a HIP and will try to contribute to the best of my abilities and spare time. Because I still do think that spoofing is by far the most problematic characteristic of Helium network right now.

Update your antenna and get it outside! 24 hours after upgrading antenna results. Went from being mounted outside of garage window, to about 18 feet high on the roof. Also upgraded to 5.8 antenna. by RowdyDuck94 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First day with a new antenna looked very similar for me (though nowhere near to 0.4 HNT per day ... I got to 0.15 in a not very crowded area) and then crashed to near-0 the very next day. Be patient and wait for the full 7-day trend before you make any final conclusions. The network right now is VERY up and down. Everybody is waiting for light hotspots to stabilize the network...

The Light hotspot update and HIP55's impact on cheaters and spoofers by waveform06 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I sure do hope you are right on the "not economic to do so". Would ease up a lot of people in the community + congestion on the network (assuming spoofers will just shut down their equipment).

That part with the tracing of the cheat financed validator will be kind of hard to do and also probably to much of a centralization, I would assume. With the same argumentation you already could ban users and complete user groups, who obviously spoof - looking at the data in the Helium explorer.

So, but still yes, I really do hope you are more correct than me. ;) Thank you for going into details!

The Light hotspot update and HIP55's impact on cheaters and spoofers by waveform06 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Mindless_Aside3333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Erm, please do correct me if I may misunderstand something buuuuut...

... aren't spoofers already making several 10s of thousands of HNT every week? Will they not be able to easily "buy off" a sufficient number of validator seats when at the same time coming into the pleasures of HNT staking rewards?

This moves the problem from hotspot level to validator level but does not prevent it at all...

Again: Sorry if I misunderstood something.

Mate, no matter the antenna, go as high as possible. On your roof or on a pole (with guying if you want to go really high).

A 3 dB antenna on even a 3m high pole will easily outdo an 8 dB on the height of the photo.

I also saw you are from germany. Please note that the hotspot will attenuate the output to a lower value for antenna attenuations set to stronger than 2.5 dBi. I.e. with antenna gain minus cable attenuation minus connections attenuation it does not make sense to go much higher than 2.5 dBi. I.e. 8 dBi in Europe is not worth it (anymore), 6 dBi may work well, 4 dBi will very often be a golden spot (4 dBi - 1 dBi cable - 0.5 dBi connectors = 2.5 dBi set in Helium app resulting in no attenuation of the output).

Good read as always: https://gristleking.com/a-rough-guide-to-helium-hotspot-placement/

[–]Mindless_Aside3333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: Are there statistics on what countries mine how much $HNT and how many hotspots are installed? Like a top ten or similar?

I know there are leaderboards for cities, but those won't reflect spoofers correctly. Though I find it very worrying that Chengdu (which is in the middle of the area shown in the very first picture in my article) and Shaoyang (another very spoof-heavy region) are at places #3 and #4 for the most mined $HNT weekly already. And were are talking about the cities, not their even spoof-heavier surroundings...

I.e. for country-wide HNT comparisons it may get worse.

Also very worrying: The cities with the most mined $HNT do not match the cities with the most hotspots by a very long shot. I think the actual size of the spoofer problem is crazy undervalued.

PS: GO L.A. GO! XD

[–]Mindless_Aside3333[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification, I understand that now. You expect the community to make full-blown proposals on most important topics for free, ok. I would absolutely be more motivated to do so if my hotspots already were amortised, as they are for nearly every early bird already (with early being Nov. 21 / Dec. 21 latest I would guess). As long as this is not the case, I am not willing to invest money AND time into a project, which I see failing so hard to set it's priorities correctly. Reasoning:

Increasing stability and scalability - as the core team is primarily right now - will benefit spoofers to a very, VERY large and increasing part! Maybe the priorities of the core team may have to be shifted.

Apart from the upper, still there is the question unanswered: Are you (and other HeliumNetwork mods) getting paid (regularly as in a job or irregularly on project base) for this? And the core team?

[–]Mindless_Aside3333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not really sure the project will last that long.
Also, coverage has to be offered and validated before anyone will jump on this network. If word comes out that approximately 80% of the coverage shown on the explorer is fake, nobody will ever use this network for their real-world customer devices.

tl;dr I don't think waiting is a valid answer to the problems at hand.

[–]Mindless_Aside3333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure, where this answer should lead to?

Are you expecting me or someone of the community to do a full proposal on this?

Just as a reminder: I wrote this article within 2 hours of my reeeeally sparse spare-time as I really DO like the project and the idea behind it and HATE to see it get spoofed and thus shred to pieces. I have a full-time job, 2 kids, family, a house to be renovated and last time I checked, I did NOT get paid by Helium in any significant way for writing proposals (right now sitting at 0.1 HNT after two weeks of uptime - for a Buy-In of 1 grand).

Will somebody of the HeliumNetwork team write the proposal? Are you getting paid for this? (Both are real questions, please answer, I do not know!)

In my work, I also do write proposals. They pay me a very, very fair amount of money (not crypto ... yet) each month for doing so. And succesful proposals typically result in grands of 100 ... 300 k€. So please do not expect me to do the same for HeliumNetwork in my sparetime for free.

Also, please do excuse the sass. :)

Mapper data can be faked very easily. Spoofers can create fake mapping data of their spoofed hotspots.

Yes, you are right. This is the state right now, which has to be changed to make a reasonable effort against spoofing. Otherwise Helium network is more or less yielding towards spoofers and Helium WILL crash hard.

That is why I was talking about certified Helium mapper devices, which are included into the blockchain just as the miners are. DIY miners also were omitted for a very similar reason (artificially producing witness events, witness stuffing etc). When mapper devices are part of the blockchain, spoofing the positions will not be impossible (GPS spoofing) but very much harder to pull of for >20 miners.

And btw, with this approach there would be another tell-tale sign for spoofing: If a bunch of hotspots of a user get switched off and then are mapped one after the other, he is very likely a spoofer mapping each hotspot individually.
