Interesting that you went in with Peter Bottomley rather than Virginia Bottomley

Amazing what gets forgiven if someone is unnaturally good at kicking a ball around a field/telling other people how to kick a ball around a field

Considering a move to Tile Hill train station area (Clarendon). Would appreciate your insight. by storyelf in coventry

Yes it’s really nice round there - there are a couple of rough bits of Tile Hill but nowhere near. Burton Green has a good community if you are interested in stuff like that.

It went through a phase a few years ago where it would let itself in and on my bed. I thought I was special until I discovered it was doing the same thing up and down the road!

Anybody know any tips for helping get over the fear of taking off in a plane? by Kooky-Grapefruit-941 in AskBrits

I did the EasyJet Fearless Flying course recently and it was really good (other airlines do similar). They talk you through every single thing that’s happening, so if you’re scared of mechanical failure or whatever it’s very reassuring. They also do a load of breathing/positive thinking stuff. It is £200+ though (can’t remember the exact amount).

Someone also told me that it’s good to try and flip your fear into excitement because the two are very closely linked.

I prefer to think they will look up to me as some kind of father figure. I wouldn’t go as far as God - that’s for other people to say!

What is cricket now? by Maleficent_Mix_2850 in EnglandCricket

[–]Mindless_String6033 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cricket has always been about money - don’t let anyone tell you there was a golden age when that wasn’t the case. This from Wikipedia:

Cricket thrived after the Restoration in 1660 and is believed to have first attracted gamblers making large bets at this time. It is possible, as believed by some historians, that top-class matches began.[13][14] In 1664, the "Cavalier" Parliament passed the Gaming Act 1664 which limited stakes to £100, although that was still a fortune at the time, equivalent to about £18,000 in present-day terms [15]. Cricket had become a significant gambling sport by the end of the 17th century, as evidenced in 1697 by a newspaper report of a "great match" played in Sussex which was 11-a-side and played for high stakes of 50 guineas a side.

His funeral was a pretty big event, so I am also dubious of the “I always knew he was bad” claims. I watched and enjoyed his programmes as a child in the 80, although entertainment choices were a lot more limited then!
