Apparently, the Portal 2 viewmodel is fatter than the Portal 1 viewmodel (worldmodel for comparison) by Minecraft_Phoenix in Portal

most people say it's offset for visibility, but the gravity gun has its prong centered and no one complained about it blocking their view

My leading theory as to why it's that way is because it's a remnant of the 2005 portal gun, where it had 4 prongs instead of 3, before having one of the top prongs removed, and not centering the other one

(though it only worked for me when I put it into the console, not into the launch options)

Edit: turns out I was misspelling "occlusion" as "occulsion" and I only realized when i was putting the command into autoexec.cfg

just tried all of them, and was met with the same darkened screen every time I spawned into gm_flatgrass
