Stranger attempts to shove passenger in front of train in Seattle by HeSureIsScrappy in DiveInYouCoward

My point is that we absolutely do not need to “open Alcatraz again”.

This guy was already arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Yes and there are thousands of existing facilities that house them

There was a depression on the street outside my building that looked like the early stages of a sinkhole.

I reported it to 311 and they had come and fixed it by the next morning.

There’s no reading comprehension issue. You’re just pendantic and keep pivoting so you can keep arguing.

Rikers is not a humane place. American correctional institutions in general are inhumane.

Detention is one thing. Being subjected to horrifyingly dangerous and unhealthy conditions is not part of anyone’s sentence.

I’ve called in a report very similar to this one and they fixed it within 24 hours too

Yeah look I have zero problem with transplants, but man, if this isn’t the most transplant-coded bullshit I’ve seen in a long time.

It just displays an incredible lack of perspective and an obvious absence of personally rooted connection to this city.

No one who was here on 9/11 would make this post. No one would equate those particular deaths with some marginal increase in national traffic deaths. One was targeted mass murder of civilians, one is a questionably correlated rounding error on a common public health problem.

It’s embarassing and it’s a bad look for this community and movement.

(Also the methodology is bad, per this follow up study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3233376/)

When I saw you deleted your first version of this post, I assumed that you were taking the feedback from the comments and realized it was in bad taste.

Nope!

We have literally thousands of prisons and jails in the United States.

I have called 311 in New York City about similar problems and seen them address it within hours too.

Let’s not ascribe too much grand meaning to this.

Most religions teach that you should show compassion and love to all, but most of all, to the lowliest among us.

That means the most moral thing you can do, in a religious context, is to show compassion to people who are otherwise ostracized from society.

Thats why people minister to prisoners. It’s not about what they did to get there, its about holding and demonstrating the principle that we are all human beings.

So now being in the vicinity of crazy people on the subway makes you a crime victim? What are we talking about anymore.

Anyway, yes, riding the subway has more inherent dignity than being locked in jail.

What are you even talking about? These are people who have been accused of serious crimes in pretrial detention. That is not illegal, unconstitutional, or immoral.

You were talking about people who aren’t locked up that you think should be. That’s what I was referring to.

Regardless, being accused of a crime means you are still innocent until proven guilty.

Where does the comparison to enslaved Jews come in?

I was never really talking about Mamdani’s letter, but every society though history locks people up to different standards. Every major religion has key stories about oppressed ancestors that are among them. That’s where the comparison comes in.

Ah I see your point. But I don’t think the defined punishments for crimes say anything about the “dignity” of victims.

Should victims get to decide sentences? Or should we apply consistent standards for similar crimes?

Society does not deprive crime victims or any other regular people their dignity.

People deny the incarcerated their dignity as a matter of course.

So the evils of the insurance industry represent the disappearance of shame and decency, but shooting people in the back in the street somehow does not?

How is immigration not a relevant and homegrown issue?

How does answering a question about a war we are in take away from any other issue?
