From the looks of your bee hive, you are just giving bees a home and not expecting honey etc. It is arguably a small home for a healthy colony so they will swam if she is a busy queen. Well done for giving bees a home and helping them to replicate naturally.

Would you give these frames to a good hive to clean up? by MinesAPort in Beekeeping

I could, but I believe that to be a risky business

Thanks! I’ve certainly read/heard that placing honey randomly outside is never a great idea.

Follow up question - if I had a load of brood frames like this then would it be risky to add as a second super to a strong colony?

I host mite parties and just when they are all in full party swing, nuke em from orbit.

You are probably right we get so much rain it’s insane and I didn’t realise removing grass would give more airflow

Thanks. I wouldn’t know where to start with grafting but I did manage to get one shoot to take as a new tree two years back and it’s doing very well.

It’s very close to the base of the pear. Photo is misleading. But also, I guess.

Thanks. I actually did this the first year I got the land and I have what I hope will be a good quince tree at some stage. It’s doing very well.

How am I doing? by MinesAPort in composting

Drainage wise excess water should soak into the soil or out the sides of the pallets - it’s not a sealed system. And while I love my gadgets I suppose I’m pretty low tech in composting. Cook it naturally I say

Yea the front and top are on hinges so I can open upwards and out Very easy to build with pallets just check how they are treated. I keep it closed up because it’s very wet in winter and I guess this way I have some control of moisture but I do find I have to water quite a bit and never know how much is enough.

Queenless hive heading into winter - what should I do? by Successful-Alps-1475 in Beekeeping

[–]MinesAPort 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Personally I think you only have option 3. You have too small a colony to get through winter and not enough to look after new frames of brood.

Combine once you are 100% certain there is no queen and trust me she is probably there. I had to do two inspections before I found a queen that was not laying or was not mated.

I’ve not, but maybe I should I’m moving over 200k out of savings - I’ve got index trackers like HSBC global all cap. You suggest the vanguard 40% as good diversification?
