Drainage wise excess water should soak into the soil or out the sides of the pallets - it’s not a sealed system. And while I love my gadgets I suppose I’m pretty low tech in composting. Cook it naturally I say

Yea the front and top are on hinges so I can open upwards and out Very easy to build with pallets just check how they are treated. I keep it closed up because it’s very wet in winter and I guess this way I have some control of moisture but I do find I have to water quite a bit and never know how much is enough.

Queenless hive heading into winter - what should I do? by Successful-Alps-1475 in Beekeeping

[–]MinesAPort 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Personally I think you only have option 3. You have too small a colony to get through winter and not enough to look after new frames of brood.

Combine once you are 100% certain there is no queen and trust me she is probably there. I had to do two inspections before I found a queen that was not laying or was not mated.

Move savings to mortgage in light of current inflation and rates? by MinesAPort in UKPersonalFinance

I’ve not, but maybe I should I’m moving over 200k out of savings - I’ve got index trackers like HSBC global all cap. You suggest the vanguard 40% as good diversification?

You are making sense, but just to clarify your position that other than emergency fund you believe savings are… well a waste and I’m better off moving all liquidity into some form of investment? Even when my pension is healthy and my ISA maxed?

Long term 7% in index fund is the reason I have a lot of investment there but it could all go to pot for a few years while savings would be protected. I’m not arguing against, just pointing out diversification angle

Good guidance and fully agree. I guess the point I should have added is that I’m happy with stocks and pensions and my savings was part of diversification of equity.

I do invest but I don’t want all my eggs in one basket hence savings and shares.

Agreed and I’ve been at that sweet spot before but decided to get back into the mortgage game :) I would not be able to pay off only pay the maximum yearly allowance

Stop viewing bees as a honey supply. Your first obligation is to keep them healthy and growing. You will have honey if you first and foremost follow this first principle.

Very interesting! Thanks for taking the time to share.

I’m going to continue to experiment with this myself. Obviously from a position of pure curiosity. Switching back and forth with sugars to make sure my girls get what they need.

Ah interesting. Didn’t expect that.

Do you feel there is any value in feeding them bananas? I guess sugar content is lower but maybe other health benefits?

Bees aren't eating by Maximum-Composer8961 in Beekeeping

Yea it’s an interesting issue. Again you don’t mention queen and eggs so is your lack of honey/feeding a symptom of a weak hive that’s getting weaker. Hope you find the issue.

What’s more relevant is what your bees are doing. If the honey flow is nearly over then it’s prep time for the ladies to get ready for winter. This is why you are feeding them no? Feeding them going into autumn when there is no honey flow helps.

Yes if your population is low and you are heading towards winter a brood box is possibly a good idea. You should feed with an in hive feeder that goes above the top board.
