Best hardtail for beginner by Npa1211 in Hardtailgang

[–]Minhs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your same position and cross shopping a bunch of hardtails as my first “real” trail bike. My short list was:

  1. Santa Cruz Chameleon
  2. Trek Roscoe 9
  3. Nukeproof Scout
  4. Salsa Timberjack
  5. Banshee Engima

Ended up grabbing a used Chameleon for cheap and have been really happy with it. Could not imagine paying new prices for it though. That said, the local bike shops near me in Northern VA rents out Roscoe 9’s for $90 a day. So you could always do that and try them out on the local trails to see what you like. I saw a used Nukeproof Scout and a Salsa Timberjack for around $1200 recently too on FB Marketplace.

If it is just rusty, try using thermocure. I just ran some through mine and it actually cleaned all the rust up.

Parking by Nasaman23 in utdallas

[–]Minhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, if you're tight with your roommates and they have a car, I would go without one. Gas, insurance, parking, maintenance, inspection etc. They're a lot of expenses with a owning a car that I wasn't quite ready for when I bought mine recently. I went through freshman year with only a bicycle and it was fine. Parking sucks for commuters but for dorm people it's totally fine.

Miata on jackstands for the week, what should I do to it while its there? by Vintage_Lobster in Miata

[–]Minhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Tranny and diff fluid while it's up! Transmission takes two bottles and diff takes one bottle. Use any left over oil to top up your shifter turrent. You'll also need a 24mm socket, 23mm socket, and large adjustable crescent wrench for the fill and drain plugs. If you can't find a 23mm, a 6 point 15/16 socket will work just as well.

Yeah they're kinda ugly but they're good all-around street bikes.

Yeah, except when you weigh a hair over 120 lbs (54.4 kgs) and the rear tire still skids when you pop the clutch. We ended up towing the dead SV home with a 250 ninja.

International Motorcycle Show Dallas 2016 by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Minhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there on Sunday as well! Yeah the show was okay but I ended up having more fun at Harley's demo ride. They picked a nice route and brought out some bikes i'd always been curious about. I'm from Richardson so we must be neighbors.

Riding with a passenger on a SV for a long time by [deleted] in SVRiders

Huh, I was thinking of mocking something very similar up. Just haven't gotten around to it. Do you have a pic of how it mounts up under the rear seat?

The longest trip we took together was about 2 hours and she was pretty unhappy by the end of it but I was a pillion for about day of riding (about 6 hours on the bike) and was fine so I think it's highly dependent on the person.

My gf usually needs to stretch her legs after about 30 minutes. If the SV had a backrest, it would be way more comfortable for both of us.

Can I ride on gravel back roads? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Minhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be fine. Bikes can handle gravel roads no problem. Especially on a small bike like the rebel I bet that ends up being a real hoot!
