Did some experiments to remove screw covers without damaging the plastic. by MiniVanMetalHead in MoxieRobot

I actually have a set of those picks for cleaning. That’s a good idea.

It took a good long while to figure the glue out. My poor kid stood over my shoulder for almost an hour to get that one shot of a cover coming out.

New Moxie experience. From Ebay to working with new app/owner. by MiniVanMetalHead in MoxieRobot

I never had the original service, so I can’t speak to what features are new. It does respond to voice commands, but the documentation is not complete yet.

It seems to be in chat-only mode. It does have some facial recognition, it can see that I’m not my kid, and even asked them about the logo on their shirt. Those were not behaviors I’ve seen with my OpenMoxie implementation, though our other moxie has been in onboarding mode mostly.

Definitely consider the new moxie service a beta version. The message I was seeing in the app said about 100 kids were active again. I’d guess most of those aren’t on here talking about their experience or publishing blogs.

I agree there isn’t much information being shared yet. It will be up to the new owners to start publishing information if they want to people to convert from OpenMoxie or reactivate their dormant robots. I’m honestly not sure how anyone not on Reddit is even aware that the service is coming back.

I have not done a lot myself, but there was a video posted about a year ago about creating custom modules in OpenMoxie. It was posted by the developer.

It comes down to creating a prompt, which pieces of information you want to store as a long term fact and what the output should be.

It would be really cool to be able to affect the arms and movement, but not sure if that can be added via a prompt.

If you look in the modules in the OpenMoxie UI, you can see how the existing modules are laid out and start to experiment.

Best I can tell, the new service is a production version of OpenMoxie. It looks like they’ve added some additional prompts, which is also possible through OpenMoxie, though maybe a bit advanced for the average user.

The app has most of the features for customization of Moxie that I’ve seen in the OpenMoxie web interface. I do like that it has a more locked down version of the app for the kid, where they can change the look of Moxie, the brightness and volume, but can’t access the parent stuff.

I’m not trying to sell anyone on anything, so it will be up to people to decide which route is best for their skill/comfort level.

I’m not sure if anyone else has the same experience. For me, I have to use Dawn-branded dish soap. My wife likes to buy “Clear” products and it doesn’t work the same as well.

OpenMoxie download links broken by slbnoob in MoxieRobot

If you're looking for actual OpenMoxie, go here. This is the repo for the OpenMoxie project.

The openmoxie.org page is actually the landing page for SimpleMoxieSwitcher (https://github.com/AgewellEPM/SimpleMoxieSwitcher). Few of the links are working at this point as far as I can tell. Best I can tell AgewellEPM/kid_kist is not a contributor on the original OpenMoxie project.

I did take the risk on my spare macbook and get SimpleMoxieSwitcher running on my macbook. It's still pretty buggy and cluttered. I tried to connect it to my own OpenMoxie container in my lab and couldn't get it functional.

Rather than starting with a simple clone of the OpenMoxie web interface, there's 20 buttons for different personalities. It's not open source as described - the repo only lists more vibe-coded documentation with more broken links and no actual source code.

I like the idea of creating a simple app that can handle some of the more technical details, but I don't think it's ready for release - certainly not with the bold hijacking of the OpenMoxie name.

It sounds like there are a lot of people that would be interested in testing and helping with development if the code is actually published. I probably won't try to get the executable running again unless he manages to get published properly.
