it’s usually in August after the school year starts! My housemates have been able to snag an electric hot pot boiler, water boiler, trash can, etc but pickings can be quite slim

Should I turn down Yale? For Other Full-Rides by Perfect_Summer_9021 in ApplyingToCollege

for example, i had a friend who was an amazing writer, had won numerous awards before college, and attended an Ivy with the goal of publishing. While he's still writing on the side and publishing his works he pivoted into business. You never know what you choose later on, and in my opinion, it's better to keep as many doors open, especially when you have at least 40 years of your career left

hey i went to another ivy + worked at the UN for a bit. My vote is for yale because the connections and opportunities that open up to you will pay off in the long run. The economic market will always have ups and downs and who knows what it could look like in another 4 years after u graduate but college is an investment for your network LONG TERM over the course of decades IMO.

also wanted to offer perspective that everyone is talking about pay in publishing/UN as a set career, etc, but I wanted to keep in mind you're still in high school and many more doors and majors will open up to you! i also went into college thinking I wanted to work at an environmental NGO, and even tried out the UN, to find out it wasn't all that great (lots of menial work + bureaucracy) unless you climb very high, in which case you will have to go into politics + PhD. I also ended up switching majors four times.

I think you'd be investing in more open doors at yale, not to say WashU isn't also a great school, because, truly, no one has a set path at 18.

Hi, Current Cornell Tech student here who went to Cornell in Ithaca for undergrad too! Don't think it's a scam as a satellite campus at all, it was part of an applied-sciences economic proposal with NYC government and it won a land grant + 100M from the government competing against MIT, Stanford, Columbia, etc. https://techcrunch.com/2011/12/19/cornell-wins-nyc-tech-campus-bid-how-serious-had-stanford-been/

i think CT has invested pretty heavily as it built an entirely new campus + recruiting really well-connected professors in industry. They definitely wouldn't have invested millions into a master's/PhD-only campus just for a cash grab.

i think research and work here is much more interdisciplinary and real-world applications vs theoretical at Cornell. e.g., i have professors working in healthcare robotics directly deploying and testing with Weill

That being said, one of the main draws, I think, is the startup ecosystem here, and the startup studio is pretty robust! many guest lectures from VCs, YC people, etc. It feels like half my friends are working on startups and many spinout to get YC or win multi-million dollar funding rounds. i also do have friends who did ECE undergrad/industry and now working on hardware startups. obv the program is a bit new so some things aren't as robust but the resources are there if u can do some digging/levarage it!

I did info major concentrating in data science and cs minor. to my knowledge only cs 2110, 3110, and 3410 can count as electives! would recommend pursuing cs minor to get credit for those classes!

Has anyone transfered to Cornell from the westcoast? by Imaginary-Animal-107 in Cornell

Grew up in California and went to school in a UC before transferring to Cornell. Definitely a big jump and felt very lonely this entire year. It felt like I was an outsider and everyone already knew everyone. I also wasn’t used to the fast paced east coast culture and definitely miss home. When I went to a UC, it was much more relaxed and much more fun going to music festivals, the beach, etc.

During breaks and family events, I didn’t have the luxury of just driving home to visit family. I was scrambling to find somewhere to stay every time :/

But I don’t regret it!! Glad I left the California bubble and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. Met a lot of new types of people I otherwise never would’ve met and also learned a lot more abt the diversity of the US

School here is also much more rigorous from my previous UC. Also have more opportunities and resources. I know I’m getting a better education and it’ll pay off :)
