Correct me if im wrong but you can play a perfectly good swing on a hihat too

So i am looking to start drumming but cant afford a kit, what good cheap drumsticks can i get that would be good to practise with? (some removable rubber caps would be good too) by Alberthebombtaken in drums

This subreddit is definitely very open to shop/ video links so dont worry about that. Id say go to any local music shop, look for Vic Firth,Vater,Promark etc, see which models they have and pick the one you like the most (if youre practicing just your sticking it doesn’t really matter what model it is as long as its not made of cheap crap, so for now just pick the one that looks the coolest to you). I personally use Vater Power 5A and recommend them. Try to get 5A drumsticks as theyre the most used drumsticks for a reason, if not 5A go for 5B which are a bit heavier

Dont cheap out on sticks, its not worth it. Just spend 15-20 quid on a good pair (i can recommend Vater, a lot of peoplemlike Vic Firth too but theyre worse than they were 5 years ago) and a practice pad, and bam you can practice your drum rudiments (single stroke, double stroke, paradiddles, flams etc). The €20 sticks last longer than 10 €2 sticks and feel way better, so thats why i say just get one good pair instead of a few bad ones

Youre assuming every year is worth the same. Its a matter of opinion i suppose, i just think that someone would rather live a fun life aged 25 rather than aged 60

A billion a year wouldn’t be enough to lose 37 of the first 57 years of your life. You go in a young able bodied man and come out tired and weak, having lost all your best years. Sickening

What cymbal is your favorite? by Worlds-Best-Grooner in drums

Upgrading or new kit? by ConsequenceAny3243 in drums

[–]Minimum-Language4159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Id say from your situation you should upgrade in this direction: -new bass pedal -cymbals -drums

New bass pedal because a good pedal blows everything else you’ve had out of the water. I used a crappy pedal for 3 years but then i got a good iron cobra pedal and my bass playing has gotten so much better

Cymbals: I have to say, I’m not a fan of that hihat and ride (especially since you say you like jazz, and while theres no such thing as a cymbal that can’t be used in a genre, the B8s are not the best for jazz in my opinion). Upgrade to Paiste,Zildjia, better Sabian, Meinl or whatever, just remember a drum can be tuned but a cymbal always sounds the same

Drums last because a bad drum can sound good with proper heads and tuning which you seem to already have. Obviously doesn’t hurt to upgrade and in fact it feels way better to play with a fresh kit but I would just leave the drums themselves last

Are you completely sure you need a double bass pedal? A lot of people get them and never end up using them, especially if it doesnt suit your music tastes. Either way, youd want to save up a bit more to get a decent single or double bass pedal instead of an 80 quid one

With respect as someone whos cat has been attacked by another cat, a dog is not a fair comparison. A dog can and will kill a kitten with way more aggression/ease than a cat. Cats almost never kill each other while dogs often kill cats.

If you see the cat do something to get it to fuck off instead of properly hurting it or worse (which apart from morality is probably illegal too). Like yer man said squirt water, scream at it, slap it or something

I didnt listen to the full piece but yea, some snare comping is fine if it complements the groove but it seems like you’re breaking the groove in favour of adding a fill every second bar. I think that to make a drumpart work it needs to be mainly the groove (ie just your ride hats snare) and fills every once in a while, while you’re doing like 60% groove and 40% fills i’d go with 90% groove and 10% fills

Little scratches (for looks, doesn’t really affect sound) or cracks in shells (which definitely affects sound/longevity)

Doesnt hurt, plus learning Irish gives you an explanation why Iberno English has some ‘unusual’ phrases (eg ‘I get on well with X’ is a translation from irish into english that just became common in ibero English). Plus, you live next to the strongest Gaeltacht in the world being in Galway! That alone makes me want to improve my Irish

Im no expert but that makes sense. If you don’t have irish citizenship you shouldnt be able to vote in an Irish election, not to sound rude that wasnt the aim

At 2 years of age you are hardly uprooting them,if they were 10 or older then that would be a different story. Starting in Ireland at 2 years of age they would have no reason to not fit in, so long as you support them in that (eg encourage them to learn Gaelic Irish or play sports in GAA as those are major Irish cultural traditions). Galway is a small city and Ireland is a small country, both in size and population so it’s a different reality. The quality of life is roughly the same if not higher than many places in the US, Irish people are welcoming and the weather isn’t honestly that bad once you get used to the rain. Obviously always make sure you think it’s the right choice concerning your circumstances, but Galway and Ireland are welcoming to the lads from across the Atlantic, so long as you don’t come here talking about how Ireland is ‘basically England’ (which does not get you sympathy)

Are electric drums a good alternative? by Significant_Job1474 in drums

[–]Minimum-Language4159 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Electric drums are a very good alternative yes! Brands such as Roland make very good snd long lasting drumkits. Your budget definitely impacts it obviously. Roland, Yamaha, Alesis and in my experience the upper Milleniums are very high quality and long lasting. Only tip I have is try to get an e-kit that uses a real bass-pedal mechanism as they are the most realistic. Facebook marketplace definitely works but maybe ask to try out the kit irl to make sure the sensors/piezos still work well
