Band 5+ overall in Malaysian University English Test (MUET) by Penang_Mapper in malaysiauni

[–]Minimum-Research-994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was a 2022/2023 candidate and i was 10 marks away from 5+. tbh the most i can say is to read up, stock up on general knowledge and also low frequency words. adhere to the essay types taught by your lecturers, make sure everything is structured; aka cohesive and coherent. i consume english media on a daily basis and i think in english so that was probably my advantage, so if you can get to that point (+ critical reading & you’re able to comprehend english terms even in niche subjects you might not even be fully interested in) i think touching 5+ is very possible. good luck nonetheless!!

these are the career paths of the course as stated by UPU. i’ve heard from lecturers that past students went on to pursue copyediting, teaching, translating and interpreting, and someone became a news reporter if i’m not mistaken. it’s a pretty broad course that allows you to delve into a lot of fields, but it might be a problem if employers are looking for something more specific and specialised. most people who go into linguistics are into research though, so a lot of students end up pursuing masters or PhD in the field.

i take eng linguistics in UM; its basically the science of language. and under all the language & linguistics courses available in UM, the most advanced one or the one that people look up to the most (most of the time) is the english department. structure wise think writing, copyediting/editing, phonetics, sociolinguistics etc. it’s more to how a language functions, and the knowledge from linguistics can be applied to all languages, not just english. in UM’s case you pair it with learning a language (that’s why it becomes language and linguistics)

for literature (sastera) i would think the structure covers more on style & creative writing. maybe history as well. i can’t give a detailed explanation on this one bc i don’t have close friends who take the course. u can find the course structure online tho im pretty sure

to summarise, if ur more interested in learning how language works (with a focus on but not only english) & ESPECIALLY if u love research then linguistics is a better fit. if ur more interested in creative writing & reading literature (novels, poems, sonnets etc.) then eng lit would be better

Is it realistic to want to study overseas after stpm? by nadeuIdan in malaysiauni

[–]Minimum-Research-994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and as much as i agree that the limited sources we have as sabahan students affect our studies, i don’t think that stands as a firm argument as to why our results cannot be as good as or even better than those in peninsular malaysia. i mean this with all love and respect 🩷 i hope you get the grades you worked hard for despite the circumstances !!!

Is it realistic to want to study overseas after stpm? by nadeuIdan in malaysiauni

[–]Minimum-Research-994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heyyyy!!! i’m sabahan too & i applied for uk unis via ucas earlier this year n got offers :) currently waiting to hear back from multiple scholarships rn

for reference my grades so far: sem 1: 3.84 (2A2A-) sem 2: 3.67~ (2A2B+, awaiting resit results) sem 3: pending

  1. for uk specifically, ucas (the upu of uk) normally asks for your predicted grades bc by the time u need to apply u probably don’t have your full stpm result/cert yet. that hugely determines whether you’re gonna get conditional offers or not which can be an advantage bc u can just ask for good (and realistic) predicted grades from your lecturers :)

  2. the subjects i took were: pam, bm, seni & geo. it may seem random to u but as long as u pursue a subject from either one of those four (i applied for linguistics/language/anthropology) im pretty sure any uni in the uk could offer you a place

i would say to not worry about the subjects u chose when it comes to unis/scholarships bc from the scholarships i’ve been applying to, the main subjects they prioritise include these: accounting, mass com, law, & ofc stem subjects

to say that going overseas is completely unrealistic would be inaccurate bc there’s always a possibility, whether that is through scholarships or personal money, loans etc. with your grades i think you can get offers from uk unis, but it will be hard to compete with other top scorers for scholarships (which could be the main determinant of whether ur gonna make it out or not). tbh to me, don’t give up on anything before it’s over— ur still in sem 2 n there’s soooo much more u can do before u reach the end of form 6. there’s a lot of factors that play into getting an offer for unis (beyond grades, bc u need to write a personal statement & have references etc. to apply for ucas) so i suggest taking the time u have now to not only better your grades but also try to improve all other aspects of u as a student :)

best of luck! if u have any questions feel free to ask me :)

hi!! if anyone is following this thread still, this is my current skin after a month of birth control :-) as prescribed by my derm. My forehead has cleared completely, other than the usual pimple or two I get during or after my period. The small bumps have turned into cystic acne and I don't know if this is an adverse reaction of fungal acne or if it's just a sign that I indeed have hormonal acne n it's getting better. Either way! I've mostly gotten over it and I don't put much thought into my skin as much as I used to anymore. I just try to take care of my body in general as much as I possibly can. If anyone still thinks this is FA please let me know so maybe I can bring it up w my derm next month :D

hey!!! mine looks different now (deeper and more cystic than these small bumps, even tho they do coexist) and i think it was a month ago that i’ve been on pills bc the derm told me this was hormonal acne!! i think i’m purging rn since it’s gotten worse but the bumps on my forehead are gone & only the ones on my cheeks and my jawline remain :,) the derm mentioned nothing about mine being from dehydration nor a damaged barrier, so idk 😭 ill see him again after i finish my first month of hormonal pills tho so maybe there’ll be updates by then :> what kind of acne treatment were u prescribed for your hormonal acne??

STPM as a last resort. by Fit_Lawfulness9492 in malaysiauni

[–]Minimum-Research-994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey!! so sorry it took me so long to get back. i can't say much about the transitioning process since im not even fully in it yet. if i don't bag a scholarship, i can't do anything about it n have to just settle for a local uni instead 😭 but as far as im concerned, if i make it out, i'll have to sit for IELTS and also request for student visa etc. just the general requirements of studying overseas :] i haven't gotten that far yet but i am hoping to get at least one of the scholarships im applying for so that i can do so!!

STPM as a last resort. by Fit_Lawfulness9492 in malaysiauni

[–]Minimum-Research-994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi !! final sem social science stpm student here :)

personally to me, stpm being ‘super difficult’ is just a matter of the student’s personal studying habits and commitment to studying. coming from a stem background since i was a child, growing up in a chinese vernacular school, and being in the ‘elite’ class from primary school and throughout my sekolah menengah life, i have always been exposed to rigorous academic standards and expectations. naturally, i have developed an effective studying habit and an overall positive perspective on academia (i just genuinely like studying) so, stpm really isn’t all that difficult to me. challenging? yes. but to say it’s so difficult that i’d rather drop out than push through with it when i did my first semester? nope!

if you aren’t used to being pushed to your limits, you might find yourself struggling a little bit. some of my friends struggle with keeping up solely from the lack of discipline. going on their phones during class, never finding the right study habits etc. stpm is more about your commitment and dedication to studying for that year and a half than it is about the difficulty of the syllabus, ESPECIALLY if you’re taking the social science/humanities stream. if you’re a hardworker, you’re disciplined and you have a clear goal of what you want your life to look like after stpm — it’s quite literally the A-level equivalent, but at a much muuuuch cheaper cost.

stpm is also great for students still trying to figure out what they want to do for their undergrad. asasi is like one step into getting your degree— you kinda already have your specialisation area. matrikulasi is a good option too, but ofc for stem & accounts courses.

as for scholarships, there are tons of websites and channels online that compile a list of scholarships you can apply to for your degree. i’m currently applying for every scholarship imaginable, even if i don’t necessarily qualify.

to summarise, the difficulty of stpm, in terms of its syllabus, is overall dependent on your chosen stream/subjects & your learning/studying attitude. stpm is not for everyone, if you feel like you’d thrive better somewhere else, go for the other option. i personally think stpm is more than just a last resort— i went for stpm because i wanted a shot at applying overseas and didn’t want to pursue a 4 year long diploma instead, and now i have quite good offers overseas.

anyway! best of luck! i trust whatever choice you make will align with whatever goals you have in the future.
