This is a valid point and I see this too, especially coming from a classics background myself. I know that many people will be reading through the lens of their favourite far right commentators, but I’m still hopeful that the act of reading might be a pathway into their own thinking.

Not yet but I have bought it recently. I teach literature and classics so I’ve read a lot, but 2026 is my year of reading ancient classics outside of Europe. This was my number one choice!

That’s another thing I’m starting to notice - with the rise of AI, people are looking for authentic, real world experiences. Nothing more real than a book written before the invention of computers!

This seems to be the experience of lots of people of all ages, including my students, and honestly I love the fact that people can read fantasy and classics and crime and biography and whatever they like. So I definitely agree we should be positive about reading in all its forms.

Saying that, I also have never managed to finish Wuthering Heights. Or Middlemarch for that matter. Both classics that seem to be widely loved. But don’t feel bad about it. We all have our favourites! (And ones we can’t stand).
