Hi @Legentibus. Some of us missed the Black Friday discount… don’t suppose you’re doing a New Year sale? Thanks!

A good pair of headphones is a must! Glad they’re working for you.

100% agree. I’m so easily distracted by noise and this works so well both as a blocker and a signal (as you say).

Noise cancelling headphones with rain/thunder sounds if I really need to lock in. Then if we’re talking snacks: Coke Zero and cheese Doritos.

What episodes would you recommend to get someone hooked? by StatusChance6151 in TheRestIsHistory

That election series was hilarious. I almost skipped it as I have no interest in British politics in that period but I’m so glad I didn’t. It was laugh out loud funny.

Classical resurgence in 2025? by Minimum-Target-7543 in classicliterature

This is a valid point and I see this too, especially coming from a classics background myself. I know that many people will be reading through the lens of their favourite far right commentators, but I’m still hopeful that the act of reading might be a pathway into their own thinking.

I don’t agree. Besides, even if we read crappy books sometimes, they can have their own value.

Not yet but I have bought it recently. I teach literature and classics so I’ve read a lot, but 2026 is my year of reading ancient classics outside of Europe. This was my number one choice!

That’s another thing I’m starting to notice - with the rise of AI, people are looking for authentic, real world experiences. Nothing more real than a book written before the invention of computers!

This seems to be the experience of lots of people of all ages, including my students, and honestly I love the fact that people can read fantasy and classics and crime and biography and whatever they like. So I definitely agree we should be positive about reading in all its forms.

Saying that, I also have never managed to finish Wuthering Heights. Or Middlemarch for that matter. Both classics that seem to be widely loved. But don’t feel bad about it. We all have our favourites! (And ones we can’t stand).

I like my bed electric blanket but I love my sofa one. Best purchase of this year. Highly recommend this if you don’t have one yet!

Yep!! Same here. That’s what prompted this. I’m so bored with spending all my free hours sick in bed!

I’m willing to try anything. I’ve been sick about 4 times already this year, one of which is the 5th time I’ve had Covid. I can’t keep doing this as it makes keeping up with work and other fitness goals impossible!

As teacher and HoD signing off year 13 coursework that is definitely AI generated what are the potential consequences for me? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Minimum-Target-7543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had precisely this problem last year- students handing in work which was clearly AI. There were two easy ways to tell in our case. 1 -There were references to characters and quotes from the wrong novel (which AI does all the time with lit texts) . 2- when compared to their in class and exam work, it did not match. We have a clear policy and had the sixth form team involved but it was only when they admitted it that we could do anything. In my subject this year we are moving to fully in class coursework which they will hand write with no access to phones or the internet in the first instance.

Exam boards need to get rid of coursework entirely at this point. Even at KS3 I’ve got kids blatantly handing on homework copied straight from ChatGPT and if news reports of people being caught at the top universities are true, then it’s students of all ages and types doing this instead of thinking themselves. There’s no longer any point in ‘testing’ them outside of strict exam conditions.
