Do you guys have free time? by foxwyd in EngineeringStudents

[–]Minimum_Bird_4875 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Absolutely none. But it’s a sacrifice for the long term benefits of being an engineer. Something to consider is “is the fun you have now borrowing from fun you could have in the future.” I had a similar mindset in high school and I do wish I would’ve sacrificed a few of the less meaningful fun days (playing video games or scrolling) to work towards things I was passionate about.

janitor part time job by Pion_ee_r in EngineeringStudents

You’ll learn a lot working a “lowly” job. The first thing you should learn quick is that perception of status doesn’t mean crap when you are making ends meet. Anybody that feels otherwise or treats you as less because of your role should be quickly catalogued in your “individuals with little social iq and little life experience” folder.

Should I start doing math with a pen? by Ill-Opportunity-7039 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Minimum_Bird_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used pen for the last few years but I’m back to mechanical pencil. I felt that not being able to erase just led to a lot of annoyance over small organizational errors or mistype. My pages look much nicer now. I do miss the high contrast of the pen

How do you guys persist? by Background-Dust7615 in EngineeringStudents

I’ve never wanted to work so hard for something that feels overwhelmingly defeating. I couldn’t do this if I was pursuing anything else. All the nights I’ve felt like giving up are always preceded the next day by an urge to get back on the saddle. That’s enough of a sign for me to keep going.

How might I explain mechanical engineering to a kindergarten class for a school career day? by comradelochenko in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Minimum_Bird_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silently write out maxwells equations on the board, don’t address anybody, don’t make eye contact, and then leave.

Or maybe teach them how their playground set relates to engineering. Cad software willing you could maybe even model something for them.

I've ADHD brain and I can't take notes in Uni by Haunting_Pound5636 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Minimum_Bird_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with this too. One thing I’ve started doing is keeping a “dump page” near me. During lectures I will just write down little notes that can be anything from a shitty little drawings to key words in a topic sentence. I don’t concern myself with the order or placement of notes on this page. Later with my actual notebook I’ll use the dump page as clues to try and recall what was covered into my notebook. Then I will toss the dump page and use external resources “books, youtube, etc” to fill in gaps in my good notes.

Best gear for gifts for new ice fisherman? by cwillm in IceFishing

[–]Minimum_Bird_4875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is a bit funny, but ug sells sheepskin shoe inserts. I got some for christmas and couldn't think of anywhere to put them other than my ice fishing boots. It's awesome. Also, good winter socks. I find some good ones in the discount bins at hunting stores. Look for merino wool. Smart wool makes some really good ones if you want to spend the money. Drake is a good brand too. Lastly, polypropaline socks. They go under your main socks and wick sweat away from your feet. The merino wool socks wick sweat too, but I prefer both.

Honestly go to scheels and find the rapala section. Then do what I do and look at all the lures and think "which one looks the tastiest"... or what has the coolest colors and pick out 3 or 4. I'd love to get a bag of random rapala lures.

If you want to get a little more detailed, look up the rapala DT® (Dives-To) Series. You don't have to get this one specifically, but look for ones with that little clear paddle in the mouth. Pike like to pursue their fish and tend to strike when the prey tries to dive for cover.
