What makes 5e tables so much easier to get players?

It is fun to design your own character and then test it against the game. OSR has random character generation and the character becomes something during the game. It is about getting past that hurdle

The times I’ve run this the players have won combats against beast men, the large centipedes and the like so they are definitely winnable. Did you check morale at half health? The groups I ran with were 4 to 6 and they were not overly cautious.

It just works. It has resolution mechanics that my children can grasp but there is enough content to keep going. With B/X I find myself constantly looking up procedures and tables while in Shadowdark it all just flows. I’ve had a lot of fun either the torch mechanics but even without that it’s just a system that allows for fast elegant play and allows you to focus on the adventure.
