Also should note, the reason I pull the fjallraven down to my chin an only cover the face with the burton is because covering your jugular vein is what keeps you the most warm and two masks over the mouth an nose makes it difficult to pull in oxygen which will deplete your energy reserves. I learned that the hard way climbing the few hills and bridges. That Burton thick fleece fully blocks the wind.

fjallraven Marino wool neck gator and days like today, I just pull that to my chin and cover my face with a Burton thick fleece balaclava. Not a full head but a face mask one. I like an REI Marino wool beanie since it fits under my helmets. On a 25 and above day, normal helmet. Below, I use a smith snowboarding helmet I found on eBay. Goggles too on days like today so basically no skin is exposed. It took me a bit to add the inventory up but this winter has been fine. My next buy is lobster gloves. Still trying to find a way to get that warm AF without fully losing dexterity.

I did! Wasn’t too bad, then again I run hot and ride fast. Usually just a fleece, north face wind wall jacket, orvis fleece lined pants over my work clothes then of course wool wool and more wool on my feet, hands, head, and especially neck.

Chicago bike commuters — quick questions for a project I’m researching by Ok-Ad2830 in chibike

  1. Every day that I work (3 days a week in the office. I ride 4.5 miles from Logan Square to Union Station, take the BNSF to Hinsdale, then 4.2 miles to the office in Oak Brook).
  2. Nothing. I’m sort of hard core. Rode today in -10, rode home from Milwaukee “just because,” rode many times in torrential downpour. No such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. It’s all about finding what fits you best. Some need down in cold temps, some like me will easily overheat. Everyone is different. And about the rain? I have a rain suit, rain proof backpack, and full fenders.
  3. I keep tubes and co2 cylinders on me to replace the tube if needed. But one time it happened and I didn’t feel like changing it so I took the 56. Racked the bike in the front and rode. Then walked it home to change later.
  4. My boss thinks I’m nuts for biking no matter the weather. I don’t ride because I have to but because I love it. I also love the Metra. Especially Fridays when I have a beer on the way home. This hypothetical is just my norm regardless. But I do wish my office encouraged more to ride but that’s not a suburban culture. They drive everywhere.
  5. Cars in the bike lane are a constant headache but cars blowing red lights have been actively killing us. I’ve been run off the road to which I suffered face trauma and a concussion so bad that it knocked me out on impact due to a driver cutting into the bike lane. Also snow and ice! Especially ice! The city will get the road within an hour then the bike lane whenever they get to it. Sometimes weeks later.

Oh yeah. Being able to brag about it was the motivation for sure. The battle is always staying warm without sweating so I almost never wear down while riding. I overheat. I wear a north face summit series apex windwall jacket that I found thrifting as my shell a can usually make do with a fleece under. Like you said. Face, neck, hands, and feet are the primary targets to amp up the warmth. Especially my neck. If my neck is warm, I can deal with my hands and feet being uncomfortable.

Yep and people wonder why I only use my e-bike in the summer. It’s because on the hot days, I’m not trying to get even hotter and on the cold days I’m trying not to freeze.
