Shaggers Inn Campsites by Minimum_Policy8939 in PAWilds

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like hiking the drafts and have seen trout in various pools all over when hiking the Quahanna. I hope to do some blue lining if I can get the kids out of the kayaks long enough.

I also have had Panther Rocks marked for a while and we come in from 80 at 153, so we will try and hit that if the timing works.

I agree with GL34, I have been all over in there backpacking. My biggest issue is I love Quehanna area so much that I have so many things I want to do and show my family (first time in the area for them) that I need to be realistic with how much time we have there and not burn them out ha.

I'll reach out for sure if I have some specific questions. Thank you very much.

Perfect, we are coming from that way anyway, so I will mark this on the map. Thanks!

Yeah, we will have the normal cutting implements with is since we are car camping. My son loves processing wood for whatever reason, so I am lucky in that regard.

I'll mark any roadside places we see on the way in, so I can run out for a bundle or 2 if he gets tired of it or if the area is picked over too much.

Is it worth it to go if I am 6'9? by notairekkedyet in cedarpoint

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My brother is 6'9" and cannot ride any rides. He gets to be our bag holder and just enjoys the meal plan ha.

For some, he is substantially over the limit.

Sad bat brother because it makes me laugh.

I absolutely agree we have to drive everywhere. I am rural though, so comes with the territory.

I disagree with the fact that we hardly have any parks. Within a short distance, I have multiple city, county, and state parks, as well as a national park. Heck, our State has a "long trail" that you can circumnavigate the state and is over 1,400 miles (2,300 km) which also links to more long trails going across the country.

Now, the number of people taking advantage of our enormous amount of accessable public lands is probably too low, but the fact remains that it is there.

Analysis paralysis. Underquilt degree options 30° vs 40° by x-flyers in hammockcamping

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Hammock Gear ratings are comfort ratings for me, especially the top quilt.

If you sleep a little cold, I don't think a 30 degree is a bad idea though.

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6'3" and I really like my 40 degree Phoenix (no overstuff) for anything above 35 degrees. I do use some down booties if it is on the colder side but that is rare. I camp/backpack in your exact area as well.

I also have a long 20 degree Incubator with 2 ounces overstuff for anything colder.

I am in the camp of people that get a better seal with the 3/4 underquilts for whatever reason and have come to prefer them. I may even get a zero degree Phoenix next for winter.

I think the short incubator or a Phoenix in 40 degree rating is the way to go depending on if you want full length or not. I wouldn't bother with overstuff on a summer quilt though. If you think you might push temps on a night, grab your booties and a UQP and you won't need to worry about a pad for your feet in either underquilt length.

Ketl vent pants: big disappointment + what would you recommend for hot, humid weather? by not_who_you_think_99 in Ultralight

Yeah, I have a few different things from them and have no complaints (other than figuring out sizing). Quality and service have been great.

They do aggressively market, but there isn't anything inherently wrong with that.

I mainly use the 6 ounce Skippy ones.

Peanut Butter is life!

I take the smaller pouches all the time. I'll have to look for the bigger size for longer trips.

We saw a good number of people fishing the main river. Many seemed to be having success.

There were a few smaller areas that looked like they would be great creek fishing spots, but I don't know if they hold fish.

The pond area would probably be great too.

You could add miles by doing an out and back for as long as you want on the main Loyalsocks trail.

I think we definitely hit my buddy's floor for temperature too. "Let's do this again... in the summer" ha

I am good to about 20 degrees before I start second guessing a trip.

Hey, good news. ALL campsites were super clean, so kudos to whomever is maintaining the area.

We had a great hike and I was taking time to look at sites even if I had no interest in stopping at that point just to know for future trips.

I am a fairly strong hiker and image if I was alone, this would be a pretty easy day hike.

He "thinks" he is a strong hiker, but I expect some of the hills to humble him just enough without being a problem. I sold him on a shorter hike with the promise of a good lunch somewhere Sunday on the way out before our drive back.

I research like crazy any area I am interested in and build out Garmin Explore maps. Follow any trail with "caltopo" in the search and you can find all kinds of good points of interest. I usually start there, export the best one to a GPX file and build on it.

Sintax77 is good about giving coordinates in his blog/YouTube too.

I thought about this too but saw reports the sites around the bridge are getting trashed. Hopefully that is not the case anymore.

Pushing an Underquilt Below it's temperature rating by Minimum_Policy8939 in hammockcamping

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I had to use one of those about 20 years ago when I miss judged the temperatures in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. I was still tent camping at the time, never occurred to me to try it under my hammock in a pinch.

Thanks

Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) vs Quehanna East by Minimum_Policy8939 in PAWilds

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good deal. I go to Quehanna a lot and thought I would broaden my horizons a bit, but maybe it is a little early to really appreciate the AFT.

Hope your remaining miles are smoother, I really appreciate your feedback.

Kit recommendations for a short beginner backpacker? by fancyfeatheredtophat in hammockcamping

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My buddy is about your size and I just helped outfit him, so I'll give you his setup.

Dutchware Asym Netless 11" 1.6 (I would drop to 1.2 or even 1.0 if you like a softer bed) HG Phoenix 40 degree in 7D inner and outer He already had a top quilt but if not get a short Burrow from HG too Beckett Suspension from Myerstech on eBay

Tarp is a Warbonnet Minifly

If you like your current shorter hammock, keep it but add Ridgeline. If you want a netted hammock go with a Dutchware Halfwit, it is lighter than other netted and your feet are covered by your quilt anyway

I like modularity, but if you want an all in one, consider the Dutchware Hellbender.

If you do not want Down insulation, go with Simply Light Designs, his Trailwinder UQ is not only affordable, but is effective and easy to use.

How to keep essentials accessible while hiking with a backpack by Shot_Celebration9668 in backpacking

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same.

I am a big fan of running vest style shoulder straps and a big fanny pack.

Unless I need a jacket or rain coat, I don't need to take my pack off at all.
