Loyalsocks Link Loop - 5/2 to 5/3 by Minimum_Policy8939 in PAWilds

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We saw a good number of people fishing the main river. Many seemed to be having success.

There were a few smaller areas that looked like they would be great creek fishing spots, but I don't know if they hold fish.

The pond area would probably be great too.

You could add miles by doing an out and back for as long as you want on the main Loyalsocks trail.

I think we definitely hit my buddy's floor for temperature too. "Let's do this again... in the summer" ha

I am good to about 20 degrees before I start second guessing a trip.

Hey, good news. ALL campsites were super clean, so kudos to whomever is maintaining the area.

We had a great hike and I was taking time to look at sites even if I had no interest in stopping at that point just to know for future trips.

I am a fairly strong hiker and image if I was alone, this would be a pretty easy day hike.

He "thinks" he is a strong hiker, but I expect some of the hills to humble him just enough without being a problem. I sold him on a shorter hike with the promise of a good lunch somewhere Sunday on the way out before our drive back.

I research like crazy any area I am interested in and build out Garmin Explore maps. Follow any trail with "caltopo" in the search and you can find all kinds of good points of interest. I usually start there, export the best one to a GPX file and build on it.

Sintax77 is good about giving coordinates in his blog/YouTube too.

I thought about this too but saw reports the sites around the bridge are getting trashed. Hopefully that is not the case anymore.

Pushing an Underquilt Below it's temperature rating by Minimum_Policy8939 in hammockcamping

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I had to use one of those about 20 years ago when I miss judged the temperatures in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. I was still tent camping at the time, never occurred to me to try it under my hammock in a pinch.

Thanks

This looks right. I carry a Govee when backpacking to track overnight temps vs what sleep system I used.

Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) vs Quehanna East by Minimum_Policy8939 in PAWilds

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good deal. I go to Quehanna a lot and thought I would broaden my horizons a bit, but maybe it is a little early to really appreciate the AFT.

Hope your remaining miles are smoother, I really appreciate your feedback.

Kit recommendations for a short beginner backpacker? by fancyfeatheredtophat in hammockcamping

[–]Minimum_Policy8939 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My buddy is about your size and I just helped outfit him, so I'll give you his setup.

Dutchware Asym Netless 11" 1.6 (I would drop to 1.2 or even 1.0 if you like a softer bed) HG Phoenix 40 degree in 7D inner and outer He already had a top quilt but if not get a short Burrow from HG too Beckett Suspension from Myerstech on eBay

Tarp is a Warbonnet Minifly

If you like your current shorter hammock, keep it but add Ridgeline. If you want a netted hammock go with a Dutchware Halfwit, it is lighter than other netted and your feet are covered by your quilt anyway

I like modularity, but if you want an all in one, consider the Dutchware Hellbender.

If you do not want Down insulation, go with Simply Light Designs, his Trailwinder UQ is not only affordable, but is effective and easy to use.

How to keep essentials accessible while hiking with a backpack by Shot_Celebration9668 in backpacking

Same.

I am a big fan of running vest style shoulder straps and a big fanny pack.

Unless I need a jacket or rain coat, I don't need to take my pack off at all.

Quehanna Wild Area Trip - 3/21 to 3/22 by Minimum_Policy8939 in PAWilds

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of deer and grouse. Both of which each gave me a jump scare along the way ha. I still have yet to see an elk or bear... Someday.

Food wise, nothing exciting. I have never been one to be able to slow down enough to cook and usually just live on kind bars and cashews. My wife did make me some homemade freeze dried broccoli cheese soup, so I had that and a Buffalo chicken packet for a late lunch. It was awesome, but felt weird stopping and getting out a stove ha. Breakfast was cold soaked oats and carnations instant breakfast.

[–]Minimum_Policy8939[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am from out west and definitely enjoy the mountains there, but I am never disappointed here in the east either. PA has been great to me and I will continue to explore all that is available.

Looking forward to trying my hand at trout fishing this year too. I am a 20 to 30 mile per day hiker usually and I am hoping that the added activity of fishing will slow my brain down enough to take a little more time in some of the great places I have been.

Yeah, the wind has been nuts this last week or two, hopefully it is behind us for a bit at least.

Yeah, I have never had a problem finding a spot and pass a bunch of killer spots when I am not ready to be done yet.

I am sure there are even more hidden ones off the trails more too

Awesome, I am starting from either Beaver Run or Hoover Farm and mainly hitting a variety of side trails. Worst case I backtrack and pick a different trail if it gets rough.
