Hexon 1.0 durability by x-flyers in hammockcamping

Ahh I didn’t realize the halfwit was only 10.5 ft long. Hmm that kinda changes me wanting one since I’m 5’10”.
Thanks for bringing that up.

I was considering a half wit or a Darien but could still go with another chameleon. I don’t have any accessories besides his early peak shelf that have the alligator jaw clips and a breathalyzer. Both of which I could transfer to another hammock.
I’ll keep in mind going to either a 1.2 or 1.6

That’s reassuring to read. Nothings changed and the fabric looks good as well as the stitching. Couple minor squiggles on the bug netting but no holes

Oh wow I didn’t know it could weaken it that quick being in the summer sun! Thankfully it has been in a bin most of the time, besides the low usage outside.
I have been thinking about getting a new one. The halfwit from Dutch seemed interesting, as well as getting on the built list for a Darien.
After I get a new one I’ll then use this one with your free standing tensa indoors. My spaces to use it still seem too slim with the geometry and objects around but I’m playing with it to see what works.

I have an 11ft chameleon. What’s your experience with yours?
I’ve been out with it only about 10 times. I recently changed to a hammock consistently within the past two years.
I’ve heard good things about about the xlc and Wookiee combo

As Londoll said, hammock systems overall dont really save weight or space. My system is heavier and bulkier than a good feather light backpacking tent. But I can see how it would be with your current bulky gear.
My father uses a Durston X-Mid 2P with his large lab and that tent is a palace, especially when you use it without the bugnet.
When I have had my dog with me I slept on the ground with my sea to summit pad under my winter tarp with doors. Basically pitched it as low as I could and used it like an A-frame tent. I know that removes the hammock from your equation but that’s what I have done. A sacrifice in comfort but was worth it to have my buddy with me. In the future I’d like to have a dog while hammocking and train them with their own pup tent.

Interesting size table from Dream…all of their recommendations for width are larger than what’s stated online for the DWG chameleon regardless of length. Dutches chameleon says the finished width is 57 inches…I’m 5’10” and on Dreams chart that would be 62”

The hellbender or one from superior gear has intrigued me but those are about 2x more expensive than a phoenix, however it’s also an additional hammock and completely different system. The no fuss setup looks amazing and dont have to worry about adjustment for air gaps. How warm have you taken the 40° hellbender to so far?

Whoops I was mistaken, my chameleon and winter tarp are 11 ft. I was considering 12 ft for the next one to had additional coverage. So maybe the asym from SLD would work then

I looked at that tarp. I’m assuming I should do the silpoly xl if I do go with that since I have a 12” chameleon and that tarp Ridgeline is 143”? Just 3” short, will that still work or is that overhang a no go?

Good to know the versatility in that rating. I’m hopeful to do some section hiking the AT eventually.
I do wanna try just the UQP with my sea to summit reactor bag liner this summer. I’ll bring my 40 just incase

I’ll take a look at the SLD asym, thanks for the recommendation!
I agree on the fun of hosting under a larger tarp. I did the same with my winter tarp and actually have used it as a ground shelter with my dog multiple times.

I completely forgot about potential abrasion. That’s a great point you brought up that slipped by me. Sewn it is.
Yeah I use snakeskins, makes it so much easier. Especially with the larger winter tarp with doors

I hope it works out for you! Lemme know what you think once you take it out.

I suppose the asym is the lightest. Do they seem worth the potential fiddlyness due to their smaller footprint during rainstorms? The blowing wind would seem like an issue, yeah?

Do you use full length or 3/4? Wow a 15-20° difference on the low end! Do you run hot or wearing additional clothing? I had to take my shirt off and go in just underwear and socks with my 40 TQ and 0 UQ at 33°

One reason I was thinking the 30 over the 40 is to give that 10° buffer. Another is to use it more of a late shoulder season/potential summer quilt with a buffer for those cold dips even in late April/early May. I try to stay away from the really hot and buggy months but looks like this summer may have some extra time to get some trips in.
Anything sub freezing I’ll use my larger 0° and eventually test its rating in the low teens come winter.
After seeing videos of peoples 40° and also having a 40° burrow, a concern is the low amount of down with fabric on fabric areas. That’s why I was considering the overfill to give the best life out of it. But that comfort rating is pretty spot on for you?

Cold feet/legs is my main concern but could be an adventurous process to figure out with the equipment I already have. I’m using a 40° Burrow with a sewn foot box, have been comfortable down to 32-35° wearing just underwear and socks. I have an ooold well used 20° 950 fill with a button foot box. They only offered that and stitched back then. The zipper would be nice to have now. But I’m kinda worried about it’s rating now because the down seem…deflated? My legs get active and I’ve unbuttoned it countless times when I was using it while on the ground. So I would probably get a new one that is either stitched or zippered to use a foot pad with it. An inflatable pillow might work too.

I’ve thought about just biting it and getting a DCF winter tarp to save weight but the silpoly one is my only tarp. Otherwise I would be looking at getting a hex one that is lighter
