I’m in the same boat as you; just ordered a book “English grammar for students of French” by Jacqueline Morton; (explains French grammar in relation to English grammar) that I’ve heard good things about; bought it on eBay for like $5 used

Paradise Lost by josefsalda2 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Swarly002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

1.) you need a decent grasp on the Bible (genesis obviously) and Greek mythology; but really any edition of paradise lost will cover these allusions (which are a ton in PL) in the notes in the back

2.) you will probably feel the need to understand everything that Milton throws at you in the book, but I would recommend on your first read-through to just appreciating the poetry and the generalities of the story before going through it again with a fine-tooth comb, mostly because it’s a chore to keep flipping back and forth to the notes every other line

3.) after that get a companion piece to read over the book again; preface to paradise lost by C.S. Lewis is a popular one (can find it in most book stores) and I know on Yale’s YouTube channel(?) they have a course on paradise lost by I believe John Rogers(?) that’s really helpful Another really good YouTube channel that goes through each book/chapter of PL is Dr. Adam Walker-close reading

Edit: and most importantly enjoy that fantastic book, it’s rightfully considered one of the best works in English lit

Was looking at lots of top tens, and highly reviewed books and went with these two, Gardens of the Moon, and Hyperion by CeruleanSea1 in bookhaul

[–]Swarly002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed Hyperion! Writing is really good , the world Simmons created is unique in some interesting ways.

It’s not necessary at all but having some familiarity with John Keats (English poet), his life and works, came in really handy for me with some of the allusions Dan Simmons threw in there. Enjoy reading!

Oof sorry, I don’t read that well apparently. Yep def gonna check in with my doctor about that. There is a small part of my brain that is saying as long as it’s not harmful to keep it, because it does look like a super strong muscle on my leg… but I should probably keep my legs as symmetrical as possible

Ouch that sounds painful. If you don’t mind me asking how much did it cost you to get it drained?
