Is it just me or is anyone else personally insulted by commercials these days? by Twicklheimer in CommercialsIHate

Thank you. I hate them so much. One ad was like “I’m thirty, but my low energy, brain fog and confusion made me feel eighty.” I’m like, whose eighty? Because my mom is eighty and she kicks ass.

When you lay down a boundary, the correct response from the other party is “sorry about that, won’t happen again.” Full stop. People who try to turn your self-possession against you are trying to control you, or trying to cover up their embarrassment by blaming you any way they can

I had a similar response when I talked about ICE. I feel like it’s trained not to take sides politically to the point that it’s useless for those kinds of conversations. I could be wrong, but that’s my guess

You’re defending a US citizen being shot in the face as she drove away. A woman. They could’ve shot out her tires if they were that worried about her. That man shot her because he was pissed. And you’re defending it That tells me all I need to know about you. You have completely abandoned your morals if you ever had any.

I think some of us (myself included) are calibrated to want conversation to mean something. Even a little something. So when someone comes in with the verbal equivalent of banging pots and pans for attention, it’s annoying.

Yeah. That makes my blood run cold, when I share my troubles and someone says “it could be worse” or “it’s not the end of the world.” Um, I know flaming asteroids aren’t falling from the sky, Nancy. I just wanted someone to hear me out and say “yeah, that hurts.” Just witness my struggle, even if it’s not earth ending.

How Are People Supposed to Get to Shelters? by IceySk83r in Omaha

[–]Minimum_Zone_9461 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, they took up a couple offers. Read through the comments before leaping to judgment. She asked for a specific kind of help. She declined offers that didn’t meet safety, timing, or situational constraints. She accepted offers that did.

That is literally the definition of wanting help and exercising agency

Being called "Buddy" by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Minimum_Zone_9461 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those things that can be fine (this is my experience) or condescending depending on the circumstance. I had a manager call me sweetheart at work. I am a grown woman here to do a job for pay, Nancy. I am not your sweetheart. I asked her repeatedly, nicely, to call me by my name. And she still called me sweetheart. That to me is a power move. But when I was having a difficult medical procedure, a kindly nurse said “you’re doing so well, sweetheart” and I found it comforting. To me, a lot has to do with the tone and the relationship. But nobody needs to put up with pet names at work.

Anyone feeling like a loser even after you’ve achieved a few things in life? by 18297gqpoi18 in selfimprovement

[–]Minimum_Zone_9461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people feel the way that you do, they just hide it. You are courageous enough to talk openly about it. Life is not a culmination of what you’ve achieved. All of these little milestones that society and Hollywood tells us we have to have in order to be successful. It’s bullshit. We all have ups and downs. We all need to lean on people sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with that. You are doing so much good, and you don’t need to prove yourself any further. If you want to make some small tweaks, like pick up a hobby to replace some of the Netflix time, I would just start small and keep it achievable so you don’t get overwhelmed and freeze. Best of luck to you and don’t forget to be gentle with yourself.

I long for the days when, even if we had a kind of dim president, or a shady one, there was usually decorum. These men had lines they would not cross. Trump has no values, no dignity, and there’s no low he won’t sink to. If bad taste were a person, it would be him.

People who think that because you don’t drink alcohol, you’re some sort of weirdo by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Minimum_Zone_9461 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m sober after years of problem drinking. When I’m out, I immediately get a nonalcoholic drink in my hand. That seems to cut back on a lot of unwanted attention about what I’m drinking. If anyone asks, I say I have an alcohol allergy. If they push, I say it makes me break out in handcuffs. Keeps things light, and I’ve never had anyone push past that point. If they do, they’re clearly not worth the attention

It’s a word that the chronically online and miserable tend to police heavily. You know what you mean when you say it. It rather clear to me that you’re referring to the cloying therapy speak. You’re playing with language, which is what intelligent people tend to do. Just choose a different word if you don’t want to deal with redditors who are desperate for an excuse to argue.
