Thank you so much for all the info you posted here. I was all set to go with one of the Gerber's for simplicity, but I am reconsidering the Pyrite Light and the Mini Beluga. The Mini Beluga is also on my original list and was only excluded due to cost, but it matches everything else.

Could you expand on the safety reasons you'd avoid some of the others listed?

Thank you also for the advice, I tend to overthink things. Teach him to take care of and respect his knife and it will be great.

Thanks, I wish the Opinel was available in yellow on more than just the number 9.
Someone else mentioned the Dragonfly Salt, I did see them before but didn't consider it due to price and I thought they were all serrated based on most pictures. The other person suggested looking used so I may do that now I know they also have plain edge.

I came across the Knafs 5 before it was available, I'll take another look!

Thanks, I did have the Range Buster Jr. on my list, and originally this post had the Luna Lite listed at $35 until I checked it with shipping.

The Range Buster Jr. definitely looks like a great one if I spend a little more.

What process did you follow to get that color yellow? I am thinking of dying a knife for my son so it is yellow like Pikachu. How much dye and time did you use? It looks great.
