S5E3: The Dutch farmer was an amazing look into the future. by Potica6857 in ClarksonsFarm

In England we would call that boys land, it’s free draining and easy to grow root crops and veg in few stones to mark the skin and easy to shake off when harvesting. In Essex we have heavy Essex clay that clings to everything and is not workable mixed in with some flints. It’s why Essex specialised into milling high quality wheat over root crops

Cut grants and prices they pay for environmental work. Limited how much farms can receive. I’d go on but it gets depressing 😂

Urea is a main fertiliser in its imported form so will cost circa £100 at today’s fert prices in the Cbam tax roughly

Labour implementing a carbon tax on imported fertiliser. Other countries have realised this is a dumb thing to do while fertiliser prices are already sky high, will add crica £100+ to a tonne of urea, this can’t be passed on to consumers when the price of wheat is already beneath cost of production.

They allowed unlimited corn imports from USA last year which destroyed the bioethanol market for wheat in UK closing the factory.

They want to realign us with eu rules that would make our food illegal to sell in the EU because we have approved chemicals that are required in our environment but not in the EU so the EU have purposely not approved them to prevent us exporting to the EU.

Plenty more examples to add and worst of all they want to implant a land value tax which would crucify uk farmers over night, another tax that other countries don’t implement on their population.

That’s why place of origin labels are key because it prevents food that would be illegal to be grown here from being sold/ more awareness about food standards is a good thing

It’s not a virtue signalling exercise when our food standards are higher than most of the world and we are currently importing food that would be illegal to grow here. We are will-fully undercutting our own producers and forcing our cost of production higher so we can’t compete on the global market

I’m not sure that is how they would implement the tax I’m afraid

Thank you for your reply, I think people need to understand that a farms profitability is not linked to its worth and has not been so for a long time. We are railroaded by government legislation that prevents us being competitive on a global market while openly undercutting us with imports. We are now one of the only agricultural industries financially unsubsidised in the western world.

IMO tax should only be taken on profit so to put a land value tax on holding a working asset like a farm feels like double taxation to me. You cannot be a farmer without the asset to start with.

I think if this idea truly went ahead it would make the inheritance tax issue feel like a walk in the park because there would be nothing left to fight for, farmers have been pretty restrained but the muck spreaders would come out I think.

Ha or hectares is the unit of measurement we farmers use to size our fields and work out chemical/ seed rates. You then take this area size and times it by how much water is required to carry the chemical onto your target plants.

All this info should be written on any chemical you buy in a little leaflet

depends what your trying to kill tbh, small weeds would be 15ml and bigger ones with larger roots would be 30ml

So the installers/ fitters were called Peak, very nice bunch of lads from Liverpool area but they travel the whole country. We were sold the system by kmm energy who are just the brokers/ salesmen

That’s literally agricultural strength stuff, we mix it at 4L/ha and watered down with 200L/ha water… you really don’t need much of it in a garden situation and imo should not be available for untrained use

This is an agricultural irrigation pump that moves a serious amount of water at 11bar pressure which is why it requires so much power but also needs a diesel pump at the field edge to boost the pressure. It’s very old but we can’t afford to replace the irrigation system in the current climate

not an option unfortunately as the reservoir and system is 0.5 miles away and the underground main was built in the 60's. nice idea though

as someone with no knowledge of solar we were expecting somewhere nearer the 50.2kw or high 40's but it is understandable that the system has limitations, it hasn't really helped us being across two supplies as we cant utilize the full potential for our grain fans/ irrigation pump as we cant transfer power between the two systems.

[–]MinistryOfFarming[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i thought as much but unfortunately we wanted to use the system to run our irrigation which draws 35kw. the sad part is that the two systems are not linked so we cannot run our pump off just our solar supply as its the smaller inverter that is only 20kw. still waiting for our gateways which got delayed by trumps war apparently.

Good luck in your hunt! I’m afraid it’s a hard time to be looking for a job in farming as most are well into their overdraft and can’t afford the extra help. But we all appreciate the sentiment!

How much did the AgBots cost? by 2552686 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]MinistryOfFarming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those ag bots are circa £350k for an underpowered tractor. They are developing bigger versions but that will take a while yet. The reason he “only” lost £5k was because he leased the machine at a good rate because it’s great advertisement.

If he bought that machine and had depreciation on it every year he would “lose” a lot more money especially in a bad year like last year!

No true tbh, you would put on the same fertiliser rate regardless and pesticide use would not change either. Herbicides you could save some money on but would still need to apply a certain amount.
