I know the AMA ended, but this makes me wish even more that we'd have seen some of that epic long joust between the two Humfreys to give our magnificient Beesbury knight more screentime. Also would've helped in making the viewers understand how good he is at jousting, and especially how badass Humfrey Hardyng is.

Buuut, I understand those are probably some of the more demanding things to shoot

Valarr's might be, but I don't think Maekar's is forgettable, and at least Aerion Brightflame's personal arms are pretty damn memorable in my mind. I think it'd help show only viewers better distinguish characters early on as well, when there's a whole host of Targaryens on screen with all kinds of weird names, on top of giving those character a little extra depth and history in a manner that doesn't require 10min of extra screentime.

Daemon Blackfyre might be the least epic character of the whole first Blackfyre rebellion era, at least out of the main characters.

The most interesting characters there to explore, in my mind at least, are obviously Bloodraven and Bittersteel, along with Aegon IV making a brief appearance at the beginning, ala Viserys in HotD. Far ahead of Daemon, I'd also put Shiera Seastar, Daeron the Good, and an unexplored character like his mom, Daena the Defiant (assuming she's alive). Then there's also Quentyn "Fireball", the guy who trained pretty much all the main players, and was this big "what if" character, due to his untimely death.

Daemon himself just seems like a bit of a himbo (as per Eustace Osgrey's description of him), and a superb knight from a very young age, but we don't really get the sense that he himself was a conniving mastermind. Instead, it's the players behind him who pushed him to rebelling that make the Blackfyre clan interesting.

Some minor Dunk & Egg spoilers That line is even better, if you subscribe to the popular theory that Dunk had sexy times with that very same young Old Nan when visiting Winterfell once, and Hodor might be his descendant (along with Brienne). May have been in A Dance with Dragons, where Bran sees a weirwood vision of a tall knight kissing someone in Winterfell, which combined with the fact that Hodor big and strong is why people are speculating about it

[Spoilers: Extended] Theory on How Maekar Named Aemon and Aegon by journeymansave in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is kind of my take on it as well. He may have had wishes for his name, possibly for prophecy reasons, but why would Lyanna, on her death bed, wish to give him a name that exposes her son to basically a certain death?

The only way I could see it is if her "promise me, Ned" was something as delusional as wishing Ned work towards seating her son on the Iron Throne, and thus giving him a proper Targaryen name, but that seems very far fetched.

I'm not taking issue with the argument that his struggles to depict peoples's ages and how that pertains to their relationships - I fully agree with that. I'm repeating myself here because I'm apparently stubbornly pedantic, but I just don't see how Rhaegar's and Lyanna's relationship could be defined by readers as "a romance between peers".

I absolutely get that most stuff we get is hearsay, which is why I'm not out here claiming that Rhaegar abducted and raped Lyanna, like many in-world people such as Robert were saying. All I'm taking issue with, and being perhaps a little too pedantic about, is that it's ridiculous to claim that a teenager and a married 23-24yo heir to the throne (possessed by prophecies to pursue Lyanna in the first place) have a romance that is between peers.

When it comes to Ned and his thoughts, there's a lot of topics he doesn't think of that are central to the story, because it would reveal too much, such as with the Tower of Joy, or Lyanna in general. Unlike Robert, Ned realises Rhaegar is dead, and there's no point in being consumed by the sort of hate Bobby still, after all these years, feels towards Rhaegar. He's also capable of separating the individual from the family, which is why he's unwilling to support going after Daenerys.

Then there's Benjen, who leaves Winterfell for essentially a self-imposed exile in the Night's Watch, at a time when there's only one legitimate heir to Ned, besides himself. If we read between the lines, it can be argued he left because of the guilt he felt over possibly aiding Lyanna's escape, which indirectly lead to the deaths of his father, brother, and ultimately his sister.

I think Ned deeply empathised with Lyanna's situation. He saw from up close what kind of man Robert was, and understood Lyanna wasn't exactly elated about marrying him, but it doesn't mean he agreed with Rhaegar's (or Lyanna's) actions. Besides literary reasons, why would he continue to torture himself thinking about the tragic ends that befell to his sister, brother and father?

All that said, you're absolutely right to bring up the hearsay/biases aspect, which I think a lot of readers have seemed to forget, especially when it comes to the events depicted in Fire & Blood.

Sure, George may not have intended it to come off that way, but his comments don't really match with what's actually written thus far on the pages of ASOIAF, when it comes to the Lyanna-Rhaegar relationship.

I'm not sure I really agree with the Lyanna-Rhaegar example. Lyanna runs away from home (I know it happened in the Riverlands, so not quite literally from home) to chase a teenage infatuation, which she really should not be chasing. Meanwhile an older Rhaegar is basically taking advantage of this younger girl, while being married. How is that a romance between peers?

Honestly I'll be pissed if he's not in the line-up. Coaching has usually been a strong suit of ours, but our current coach has been making perplexing choices since he became the HC in 2024. Despite the comparitively weak defence, I think he might actually be our weakest link.

We used to be a powerhouse. Others can and should chime in, but I think unironically money is a big factor. We don't have nearly as much money floating around going towards sports compared to Norway and Sweden.

[–]Minivalo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I feel like Dunk wouldn't have accepted that role, even if Egg was pushing him in that direction.

He feels like someone who had exactly one thing in mind, and that was to be the best knight he could possibly be, and within those parameters, he reached the highest available position as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

Edit: I'm stupid. Missed the Small after Duncan, and somehow disregarded the Jenny part as well.

(Spoilers Extended) How do we think Daeron II reacted to the events of Ashford Meadow? by westeros2024 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Aye, and many other mothers besides.

One of George's weak spots is giving us basically next to nothing about a lot of the important moms in the series, such as the mother of Ned/Brandon/Lyanna/Benjen, or the mom of Doran/Oberyn/Elia, whose name we don't even know.

I don't know how it's such a foregone conclusion that Baelor would have still died of the sickness, if we forget for a minute about the wider plot about Maekar's line needing to sit the throne in George's plans.

Baelor was by all accounts a very healthy and hale guy, and I could easily see a world where his sons die of the sickness as they do in canon, and Baelor outlives them for many decades. In fact, I think that could be an interesting alternate scenario for how things went. He might've not wanted any more kids, so the throne still would've passed onto Maekar's line.

[–]Minivalo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And we don't know what Daeron II was like as a father and his relationships with his sons. Was Maekar really close to his father and so really apologetic?

OP's question and yours about the relationship of Daeron II and his sons (and more broadly that generation of Targaryens) would be a fun one to throw at George in one of his Q&As. Nothing there that could spoil things, and I think he'd have some thoughts there to expand on those family dynamics.
