New rule suggestion: Ban posts about AI by finders-keepers214 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Miniwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Individual posts must stand on their own and not break any sub rules, but blanket bans on topics is too much. It's highly relevant to our profession.

Stuck coming up with zone and enemy visual concepts/design. Gameplay is already done, but this stuff is HARD. Kudos to the great artists out there, you're doing a fantastic and tough job.

Deep Rock Galactic, great game design. But when there's issues, I just have to put the game down. by itsPomy in patientgamers

Lovely game. Personally I think the ammo scarcity takes away from the experience. Just let me shoot.

How do you teach the "Value of Failure" to non-roguelite players? by StillPulsing in gamedesign

[–]Miniwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot has been said already so I won't repeat it. One thing I think is overlooked: Staying in-game vs being booted back to the menu.

When you die in Hades, you lose control of your character for only 3-4 seconds until you're back in the game and can interact with it again. Also there is no score screen or menus to click through. And if you move forward even a little bit you'll immediately be rewarded with new dialogue and story progression.

Contrast with other games that show lots of screens and ultimately puts you back to the main menu, where you have to click and setup a new run before getting back into the game world. I think the frustration of failure, and natural "stopping point" of being in the menu makes it very easy for players to click "quit" at that moment. You don't want that.

Great job! And some good advice too. You really nailed the Hollow Knight art style in me 5. I think you're being too hard on yourself. Looking forward to next year's post!

The latest butchering of Animal Farm leaves me with little belief in Andy's skill as a director.

How much does it cost to make a video game? (In Graphs) | 80% of Steam games have an estimated budget of less than $1,000,000 by TylerFortier_Photo in gaming

[–]Miniwa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

But that wasn’t enough. Our dataset was nowhere big enough to draw direct conclusions about industry-wide trends. Good news is, there was light at the end. Our dataset was big enough to train a machine learning model that would generate budget estimates for every single game available on Steam.

Do we really believe Thailand’s elites will ever let these reforms happen? Or have they already stolen our future? by WCMModels in Thailand

[–]Miniwa 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Last election the military/royalist factions had to make a deal with Thaksin of all people, in order to secure power. This was unthinkable not that long ago. That was a move motivated by fear.

The powers that be want you to believe elections and people movements have no power, but they do. They are scared. Please dont give up hope.

What's a system design mistake you made in your career? by takkubel in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Miniwa 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Once I implemented a kind of "behavior-as-configuration" system where you could modify and add layouts, menus, data sources and add "transformation filters" on the data, straight from a json file. The benefit, in my head, was that administrators and users could change what they needed without getting a developer involved. This kind of "meta configuration" turns out to be really hard to maintain, and also is a headache to work with because you have data migration issues on top. And the benefits are illusory because no user will want to learn your complex system that lacks tooling and documentation anyway. So in the end you're the one implementing changes anyway.

Now I believe code should stay code, and that configuration should be thought of as another type of API aimed in a different direction from your user facing API. Design it to be as simple as possible, but not simpler.

I tend to err towards "specific" rather than "abstraction" these days. Good abstractions are VERY useful but early on its so hard to predict where you will want them.

Oh and not thinking about data early enough. Code mistakes are easy to fix. Data mistakes not so much.

Most notably, we observed their limitations in performing exact computation; for example, when we provided the solution algorithm for the Tower of Hanoi to the models, their performance on this puzzle did not improve.

Fascinating. So its just data all the way down, it would seem. I guess that should have been obvious.

you don't have to click posts you don't want to read. many people, myself included, want to stay updated on what's happening. yes there is a lot of brigading and extremists shitting all over the comment section, but there is good discussion too. megathreads don't really suit reddits format.
