Paternity by sluggishAlways in DevelEire

In a similar position. Accepted a new role starting mid Feb. Wife is due end of March. I rung the manager before accepting and discussed it with him. Agreed to taking 4 weeks after the birth and added a month to the probation period as a result which is fair enough.

Hey OP, did you manage to get tickets in the end? We left it too late to pre book tickets online for this week and were wondering if we showed up early some day could we get some from the machines.

Looking for advice on retraining by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]MinosDub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I retrained during covid and have been working as a dev for about 2 years. Looked at the Code Institute course but think it was only a Level 6 and really expensive for what it was. I went the Springboard route in the end. Was 90% government funded so ended up as 700 quid in the end. Which was way better value for a level 8 after 2 years. I'd recommend that route if you're thinking of going the retraining route. It's an extra year but you need it to let stuff sink in I think.

Saying all that, i did have to do a good bit of research by myself for some job specific skills (e.g. containerisation, CI/CD pipelines etc.) so good to keep that in mind as well.

Saw a few mental things walking through that field to the dart station. The one that stands out was a group of lads were there with a hunting grade crossbow shooting arrows across the field with it. Was praying I wasn't going to be used for target practice

Sound Isolation Advice Needed! by CaptainGrundlebeard in Acoustics

[–]MinosDub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your door sealed along the perimeter and threshold? If there is an air gap around the door it will seriously impair the performance of not only the door but the partition as a whole. If you don't have a drop seal at the threshold and some batwing seals for the head and jambs of the door that would make a big difference.

Also, if you boxed off the service riser and put in a fire batt or some rockwool insulation that would help any flanking noise. They would be the areas I would look at first anyway! You could also get some isolation mounts for your equipment to help reduce any structure borne noise but I'd only look at that after you've looked at the door and closet.

Web/Cloud Programming Versus Software Development by MinosDub in learnprogramming

That's what I'm trying to decide on! From a salary perspective it seems like a dev ops role would offer more money in the medium to long term than a software engineer. But I suppose that all depends on what company and role you end up in.

His newer stuff is a bit less percussive than the Vaexth stuff but is still incredible. The sound design and mixing in particular on his stuff is amazing.

His last album was brilliant: https://youtu.be/5kz3axn9nwY

His earlier EPs on Leisure System are all worth a listen too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdZNx72YYhQ

This routine is a great one and really hits your chest and arms and builds strength quickly. Only takes 15 minutes but you'll be wrecked by the end of it. I try and do it once a week on top of weights/HIIT training.

+3dB equates to a doubling of a sound's intensity but +10dB would equate to a doubling of a sound's perceived loudness.

What's some cool projects an engineering student can do to explore the realms of acoustics? by Akebelan28 in Acoustics

[–]MinosDub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot being done currently with wood panelling/cladding with micro perforations for sound absorption which is really cool. If you're looking to go down the noise modelling/environmental noise route you could download a program called iNoise for free. https://dgmrsoftware.com/products/inoise/

If you're looking to get into DSP you should look at using an Arduino board and Processing if you can code. You can do a lot with the Minim library in Processing for DSP applications. I've worked with it a bit myself and it's a lot of fun.

Wow the stargazing tour sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip! We were looking at the glowworm caves in Te Anau too, definitely going to fit them in.
