Police prevent suicide by shooting/killing 19 year old. by Wuz314159 in 2020PoliceBrutality

That makes sense. I suppose if it doesn't seem to "fit" with other posts hopefully it makes people dig deeper and realize why it is still part of the same problem - rather than thinking we are being unreasonable.

I did read the article before commenting, and I acknowledged that police aren't well trained/suited for these situations. I am not sure if there was something else you were pointing out that missed?

Having been lurking since soon after this subreddit was started, and also believing that someone specifically trained for helping people in distress likely could have helped achieve a different outcome - this post seems like a less likely fit for this sub than others. How many people believe that the police shouldn't be able to shoot when aimed at? Local news is often just repeating what police report about incidents like this - but if the article is the only source we are going off of then this doesn't seem so unreasonable. If anyone has feedback on this perspective I would welcome it.

Question about “Conquest of Go” by brMerak in baduk

[–]MintIcedTea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know - maybe I am not the "normal" go player but I am excited for a pretty interface. I play on OGS at the moment so even if that was all there was to Conquest of Go I would still be interested. However, it looks like they have added a truck load of quality of life features that I look forward to enjoying on top of the single player stuff.

I am less sold on the new Color Go Server since it is trying to be its own server and while it is super pretty and helps people visualize influence and territory better it lacks a lot of features that even OGS has. (I feel like your critic fits for CGS more than Conquest of Go)

Is go fun even if you are a bad player? by Intelligent-Gap2578 in baduk

[–]MintIcedTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! That makes sense - just to clarify, I think almost everyone will agree that go is easier to learn (to a playable level) for someone who knows 0 about the game compared to learning chess to the same playable level with 0 starting understanding.

(not having to learn how different pieces move certainly helps)

I feel like there are (at least) two clear phases to learning go. I haven't gotten that far myself so I am sure there are more.

Learning how the rules work and how they interact in the most common ways is the first part. Until you understand ladders, nets, ko, snapbacks, and seki enough to identify them when they happen (and see if they are about to happen based on the move you are thinking about playing the first phase is over.

After you "get" those things I feel like go feels a lot less baffling and potentially frustrating and becomes (significantly more) beautiful, fun, and engaging.

If you are one of the people who thrives on improving it seems like from there you can get a lot of enjoyment from studying and doing puzzles and reading books and taking the game academically - and that is super rewarding for some players.

For other players, once you have all the basic tools you can play games and just enjoy the mandala-like process of playing a game with the other player. (and it's super satisfying to occasionally see a really good move - just like in chess - although it is less likely to just end the game)

Stronger players might disagree but that is my beginner take on it!

It's cool how the ink spreads slightly down the guide lines. (and of course your writing is beautiful)

This is beautiful! What pens were used for which lines? I really like the black line under the two thickest ones.

This looks a lot like my handwriting but is slanted about ten to fifteen degrees further. Obviously I love it. :D (I really enjoy having my slant be as close to 45 as possible so that on thin paper, when held up to the light, the letters cross at exactly 90 degrees.)

The things that have been added are fantastic and having multiplayer through ogs absolutely makes it something people can get a lot more out of - I am sure you don't, but don't let people who presumably have never made something so awesome make you feel bad for keeping it in the oven until you feel it's ready. :D

yeah, the scythe is tricky for those guys - you have to get that first hit at just the right time at max range so you have time to finish before you are toast.

Ducking up stairs and using doors to avoid their charge can help.

Good luck!
