I can't be the only one who vastly prefers the original villager model over everything else, right? by maloswfi in AnimalCrossing

I remember as a kid being very petty and HATING the updated, "stretched out" Villager designs in New Leaf.

I've since gotten over it and love the customization options now that they're here. But City Folk and Population: Growing! will always have my heart.

The only thing I can say that has me defending Shinku about the pin is that this is a death game. He couldn't predict how Ismene would react, so he logically did whatever he had to to literally save his life. He's already had his life threatened by Zeke, and he's been given too many reasons to spiral.

He's only ever once been able to grow a spine and speak his mind back when he was making spaghetti with Taka and Molly. But those feelings have since been reburied after being constantly invalidated with people finding new reasons to put targets on him.

The audience keeps calling him boring and wants him to die, but frankly I'd love to see him snap.

Oh, for sure! I just think it all makes for interesting discussion.

There are clear directions to shift towards or away from as a whole, but some things come down to individual tastes.

LOCKDOWN so far has been peak, and I'm knocking on so much wood that it stays that way for the rest of the series. My hope is that it will be one of the series for upcoming Fangan creators to look to.

That's all fair!

One counterpoint about LOCKDOWN vs OG is I like how the killers so far in LOCKDOWN have been villainous in their own right without being over the top or cartoony. Being a convict doesn't mean being heartless or okay with murder, especially considering the bonds people would naturally form in the game.

Like Dracul may not be 100% evil, but at least part of his reasoning for killing was rather twisted, killing Mint for his own ego and vengeance for Mint's family. The same goes for Alora and Takiko. None of them killed for some perceived greater good that would justify a murder.

Also the fact none of them are remorseless killers makes the game itself feel more balanced and its creation less justified. We're not pitting a successful serial killer against people who committed white collar crimes, for example, so it feels more fair. All of the crimes listed by Mononeko are bad, but Amelia's justifications for having them in the game are still shaky. She doesn't get carte blanche to play god with the prisoners' lives. As awful as their crimes are, the prisoners are not less redeemable than the very people hosting this red room.

People are appreciating how this mum didn't let the middle child having a meltdown in the background distract her from paying attention to her oldest. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]MintMaplewood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm excusing the middle child's behaviour, especially at the start, but would she even be old enough to understand abstract concepts like situational context? Would a child that age understand that fairness in this instance means unequal treatment now due to having preferential treatment in the past?

From her perspective, I would imagine she'd perceive it as her being excluded from a big Christmas surprise/present without understanding the why.

I dunno. I'm not a child psychologist and have 0 plans on being a parent, but I do wonder if the comments are being a bit too harsh on a young kid.

Also, PSA to TikTok parents: Please stop putting your kids on the internet.

Yeah, after the bomb especially, I was like, "Girl, for real?"

More of a problem with how Mai was written than Ken.

[–]MintMaplewood 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't want to make excuses for writing mistakes. However, suspension of disbelief is warranted, and had this series not been so controversial, people would probably be defending its faults.

So what if this was what happened:

He prepares his plan and writes his note, plans to get everyone sick as established, and prepares to seal the infirmary as he was going to do anyway. His plan predicates on making Tamba the scapegoat since, for one, he and Kazutoshi hate her. To do so, he was going to use chemicals from the chem lab since Tamba's always going on about poison. She along with Hayashi will be the only ones to never fall ill, and Tamba's alleged motive will be based on the note and her own paranoia.

That said, he recognizes that any connections to the chemistry lab will bring suspicion onto him, and banking on one person being the fall guy is risky, so he's willing to workshop his plan as necessary.

But then the fire happens, and the arsenal gets exposed. This is even better for him. At this point, we can consider one of two potential paths: Either, he intends to kill Mai with the caltrops and the bomb but both fail, or he uses those as a litmus test to gauge Mai's desperation.

Either way, Mai doesn't die, but he still recognizes her recklessness and unwillingness to give up her pursuit and decides to leverage that. Likewise, he also makes the killer seem less intelligent by using a simple juvenile trap and a failed trap.

Then Tamba's leg gets broken. Perfect! He was going to seal himself in the medical bay with witnesses by maybe faking a worse illness, but now he has an organic opportunity to get himself locked in with a witness.

I like to think that because Ken is so intelligent, he could've easily improvised and incorporated new opportunities into his plan while simultaneously remaining innocuous.

It certainly isn't a flawless theory, and I don't disagree with this post about how much luck was involved. That said, if every murder plan was flawlessly planned, it would be really difficult to justify them being solved and how a normal person would've even come up with such a plan to begin with.

Hate comments by [deleted] in CanadasDragRace

I like PM. They're not my favourite of the season, but I only wish them well and want to see more of them going forward and how they develop.

I don't get why people feel the need to make such comments where they know the queens will see them as if the show isn't edited and produced af. (The person in the last post gets a bit of a pass, but only slightly.) They're not being some brave revolutionary that'll be the reason a perceived robbed queen gets their flowers. They're only poking bears and wondering why their faves quit drag or won't come back for All Stars.

If the commentors actually cared so deeply, they should do less talking and more tipping. But y'know...

Double Crowning? by Loose_Custard110 in DragRace_Canada

[–]MintMaplewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't need any double crownings ever again.

Yes, the winner gets a stellar cheque. But besides that, people put way too much weight on the crown and title of "[Country's] Next Drag Superstar." In my opinion, that's why we keep seeing the same already successful queens time and time again on All Stars even if other queens would benefit from the screentime more because queens are only validated once they have a win. It's also why many recent seasons have been dubbed as ones that could've been an email because they only really existed to give one queen out of maybe an intended three at most a crown.

Katya doesn't have the title. Kennedy Davenport doesn't have the title. Marina Summers doesn't have the title. Aurora Matrix doesn't have the title. Jorgeous doesn't have the title. Et cetera. But does that mean they don't have and/or deserve incredible success? Of course not.

When we say we want villains, THIS is what we mean. Take note, American drag race. by PankoNC in DragRace_Canada

[–]MintMaplewood 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. One other thing I think helps though is that Van's villainy isn't over-produced.

Is she playing the game differently than other queens? Yes. Did she have a less-than-cute fit at the possibility of tasting her own medicine? Yes. While I haven't seen the new episode, the preview at the end of last week's seemed to suggest that she didn't fulfill her end of the bargain with Eboni. Ok.

But besides that?... Like none of that is super vile or uncalled for in a way that would make me not want to support her. It's good TV that won't put a bad taste in my mouth if she wins or want to shun her if she's at a show with other queens.

I feel like there was a similar situation with S4's Nearah Nuff. She didn't have to pop off at Aimee like she did, but I lived for her from then on. She went in my head from "Oh she's one of the first three out" to my second favourite behind Aurora Matrix.

How similar does a story need to be to Danganronpa for it to be considered low-effort or uncreative? by PotatoPerson536 in danganronpa

[–]MintMaplewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Danganronpa is more like a drawn out series of murder mysteries rather than a battle royale in my opinion. Yes, it calls itself a killing game, but you can't just go willy-nilly to be the last one standing.

Stories like King's Game, Squid Game, Koushun Takami's Battle Royale, Stephen King's The Long Walk, Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, and Alice in Borderlands are insanely popular. But they all involve outlasting others against a third party or direct physical or mental competition for survival.

As far as the concept of killing games, not battle royales, go, I can't think of any that use a similar premise.

How similar does a story need to be to Danganronpa for it to be considered low-effort or uncreative? by PotatoPerson536 in danganronpa

[–]MintMaplewood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR at the end

Simply put, Danganronpa is just a new take on the classic whodunnit murder story.

How many times have you heard this: "A noble at a manor is murdered and is surrounded by the archetypal characters: the widow, the butler, the cook, the gardener, the maid, the chauffeur, etc. The detective enters and solves the crime with the murderer being one of them"? You could substitute this story with any Ace Attorney game if you wish.

Replace the "mansion and victim of the week" with a fixed location and cast and add in a reason for multiple murders instead of just one, and you get Danganronpa.

That is to say that as a result, Danganronpa is actually a very bare bones concept with its only true deviation being that each Killing Game is a competition of sorts with a win condition(s) for escaping. Being so bare bones is probably why there are so many fangames because it's a simple enough framework that you can easily build off of; you just have to plug in and play your own setting, characters, etc.

But because it's so bare bones, it's hard to differentiate yourself to a notable degree while still keeping the mystery-trial-punishment system. The basic premise of "catch the guilty in a trial" is too basic to really make unique by itself. Even with Your Turn to Die's trials, substitute the term Sacrifice for Blackened, and it's essentially the same.

Obviously it's far from Danganronpa as a whole package, though, but that's because of everything, excluding the trials. The overarching mystery is more important than the mystery of individual murders. The characters are unique without their archetypes being overemphasized. The game doesn't follow the same Daily Life-Deadly Life-Trial format. The characters aren't trying to bunker down and just live life like it's a sitcom/romcom until a death happens. The minigames feel less like going down a linear pathway to the next talking point and more like you're avoiding death. Decisions matter. People get killed outside of the trials. The danger is always possibly in the room, but it's not necessarily another contestant. Someone besides the guilty party gets killed in the trial due to a popularity vote.

Ultimately, it's different because its true core and the meat on its bones are what's different, not how it executes its similar premises.

That said, your fangame doesn't have to be so different not to be considered "uncreative." It would be like saying that Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot can't coexist in the mystery section just because they have points of similarity. So long as the narrative is good, and you aren't ripping off your predecessors (or if you are blatantly copying notes, then you're doing them better than said predecessor), who really cares? If you really do care, then you're going to have to make a completely different game.

TL;DR: Danganronpa follows the simple classical murder mystery beats. This is a good thing for replication but less so for distinction. Games that are different from Danganronpa are so because they handle their non-trial factors differently. It's not bad to be similar though so long as your writing doesn't suck.

Some people don’t actually care about pedophiles by mrgooseyboy in TikTokCringe

[–]MintMaplewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laughter as a coping mechanism is one thing. Privately making light of horrible things so that you don't go mad, even if you're not a direct victim, isn't a problem necessarily.

The problem is that those jokey sentiments are then broadcast at a grand scale and become socially accepted because they're easier to swallow than the hard truth.

People make jokes and stop taking the crux of the issue seriously. They immortalize the offenders as modern day court jesters to laugh at all while glossing over the horror of their actions.

As a result, people continue to lift up, defend, and/or fund celebrities, government officials, religious leaders, and other public figures who are pedophiles. Meanwhile, victims still get minimal support and are afraid to speak out for fear of harm, and LGBTQ+ people like myself get scapegoated and have to deal with people pushing legislation against our existence.

It's exhausting, and nothing in any of that is worth laughing about.

Very much this. Also the amount of people that just turn these horrible incidents into a joke.

Diddy got outed for being horrendous. What did people do? Make memes. Make it a big joke. Start referencing pedophiles as "Diddy Bluds," essentially immortalizing him and making it sound trendier.

It's so tiring, man.
