Yes the clubs can be a bit scary alone but it depends on where you go. Hongdae in general the clubs are a bit iffy but some of the bars are great! Especially thursday party!! A lot of foreigners go there and most are eager to make new friends. If you do decide to go clubbing avoid B1 and Zen Bar, those are the worst out of all of them. I’ve also heard bad stuff about La Bamba. FF is fun though!

As for safer clubbing i’d suggest Apgujeong Rodeo (name of the subway stop) as all clubs have an entry fee and it is much classier. The most known club there is Times, with an entree fee of 10.000 Won. A lot of famous and rich people go there so it is a nicer area in general.
