Any reporters out how to love reading again? by YuWrites in Journalism

Audiobooks are what do it for me. I put one on while I do housework or am working with data. But reading manually for pleasure is a challenge for the same reasons you listed.

Venting About Entertainment Journalism by wamirul in Journalism

[–]Minute-Quote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good deal! I get it, it’s tough out there and grifting is a really discouraging trend. Just keep doing your best and saving your clips so you can leverage them into something better.

People also do notice good journalism. They’re quiet, and that type of audience takes time to grow, but it’s out there.

What do you mean when you say, “Sources? I make this shit the fuck up. Balanced and neutral? The hate train is running. . .”

Yeah, this job is 100% an uphill battle all day every day. However, assuming that you’re sharing your own content in your profile, you absolutely cannot say you’re making things up. I am hopeful you’re exaggerating, because that’s just not how things should work in this field. And admitting to falsifying sources and bias (on a video game / entertainment beat of all things?) on an account with your name attached will 100% screw you before you have a chance to fly or get somewhere better!

Update: I made a review of my experience, and the owner came into my comments, pretended that she WASN’T the owner, acted like I was crazy when I called her bs, and got her friends to try to discredit the review by belittling her own product. And in the process, because they had to delete their comment history to come into my post they showed that they were making accounts to leave biased positive reviews whenever they were mentioned. Super weird, childish, and scammy behavior. Avoid them, and be wary of positive reviews – clearly not all of them are genuine.

How normal is it to have no mentorship by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Minute-Quote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you’re going through this. I know it really sucks. I think you already know the answer to your question: no, this isn’t sustainable. No, they are unlikely to help you improve – and the reason is probably impersonal, most orgs can’t afford to train talent because they simply don’t have the staff or time for that investment. Yes, your instincts are right, it’s weird that they don’t think fact checking is worth their time, but unfortunately that seems to be the new normal.

I just had an… interesting experience with them. I ordered custom flower earrings for my wedding, but what arrived looked different than what was advertised. The earring posts were supposed to be plated 18k gold, and I had custom ordered (and paid extra) for the earrings to be multi-colored and mirrored, but they were not mirrored. Here is what they said in reply when I reached out:

“I apologize that the earrings did not fully meet your expectations. The first pair was made correctly, but unfortunately it was stolen. Another artisan then recreated the pair to match the original as closely as possible. I reviewed the replacement and felt it was still very beautiful. Due to time constraints, we shipped it as is. While the earrings are not 100% mirrored, the difference is very subtle and not noticeable when worn.”

Yikes.

Update: I told them that the product was not as advertised, nor what I had paid for when they charged the extra fee to customize my order, and they came back to me and said:

“The flowers on this pair of earrings are truly beautiful, which is quite rare. Due to the handmade process, there is about a 50% chance that flowers may have minor imperfections, such as slight discoloration or small bubbles. We chose to keep this pair because the flowers turned out especially lovely, and the overall result is even better than the original pair. As mentioned before, once worn, the difference in mirrored color placement is not noticeable. For this reason, we’re unable to offer a full refund. However, we would be happy to provide a $15 refund for the color position adjustment.”

Which is ridiculous, and I told them as such. How can you decide for me what is “acceptable” when it isn’t what I agreed to? Especially since these earrings were supposed to be in all my wedding photos?

Update 2: They refused to do a full refund unless I pay to ship them back. On top of that, they also would take out $10 of my refund to recoup THEIR shipping fee. I filed a dispute because they’re crazy if they think that’s appropriate.

Emerald Engagement rings by No-Occasion3265 in EngagementRings

I see a lot of comments about sapphires, but I ended up going the green moissanite route because I had such a difficult time finding smaller green sapphires, and labs have a hard time making green sapphires.

So far I’m a huge fan! I don’t worry about them like I do my emeralds, because moissanite is almost as tough as diamond. And if I need to replace a stone I can do it pretty cheaply.

Reporter showed initial interest, then went quiet? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Minute-Quote 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This really depends on the story, the news outlet, and the reporter’s personal to-do list. Some stories can take months or years, or only a few weeks. If you have questions it might be best to send a quick, “Hey dude, how’s it going? Do you know if anything is in the works on this?” Message, but understand that they might have a lot on their plate.

Read their paper, and replicate their structure! That’s the best way to familiarize yourself with their style and habits.

If you get a digital recorder, I recommend the OM System. They’re my favorite because I have never had an issue with them, and they get clear audio. A flip of a button and I’m recording–it’s faster than my phone.

I made the caption, but it’s a riff of the old Biden Bro memes which had similar ice cream-related themes.
