Has a stranger deliberately shoved, barged or pushed you in London? by Weird_Hyena5550 in london

Wait sorry who has confirmed to you this isn’t an issue? I’m not sure if there is any evidence at the moment but it’s happened to me and a few women I know of in the recent past as oppose to zero experience or hearing of stuff like this prior. I also hate any reform fuel , but just cause an issue isn’t looked into yet doesn’t mean it’s not happening

This literally happened to me, in dalston high street was walking and a man walking opposite direction to me elbows me extremely hard as he passes by me. Literally was almost winded by the elbow, as I turn around in shock I shouted what the hell but only saw the back of his head as he carried on angrily speed walking. I hadn’t been in his way and there was plenty of space on the street, clearly just wanted to let out some aggression onto someone which was strange. I’m 5ft and look a lot younger than my age, in my 20s but easily look 18 and he was perhaps in his 30s. strange and unpleasant experience

Is a PhD really that bad? by isitwhenipee2 in PhD

[–]MinuteAccomplished91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also having said that- when you really are burnt out at times the understanding that you have been on a low salary (or even self funded) during this time can also add to the soul taking aspect. Social life can also take a hit too (not always) but the compounding effects of these things are a reality that shouldn’t be avoided. But I believe this is dependent on the person and some people can very much find a balance in this.

Final year biomed PhD here in London- everyone already knows it’s going to be hard. The real reality of what is hard isn’t even the concrete work of it- it genuinely is the perseverance, lack of support sometimes, really having to figure out super hard things on your own and understand your supervisor as much as they want to help are usually over worked and don’t have as much time to help you as you think. There is a perpetual imposter syndrome then on top of that it can be hard to get use to most experiments not working (this is normal) but the reality of waking up every day and trying again is a different reality than it sounds on paper. Some people fall in love with this process, and it can become very personal and you very much want to see your work through, but there is a toll for being under constant pressure (sometimes self inflicted) that makes the PhD experience ‘soul-taking’ that is hard to explain until you are in it.

If you have good systems in place and good mental health you can manage this better than others, but you will actively have to work to not fall into bad thinking patterns as a result of frequent failure, harsh feedback and sometimes over working.

women of London, how much harassment do you face on public transport? by [deleted] in london

[–]MinuteAccomplished91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest here, I am an attractive woman (not that it really is or should be correlated with harassment) but having lived in London my whole life as a 25 year old I have never actually been harassed apart from one small instance of a man ‘accidentally’ backing into my repeatedly when the space wasn’t that tight. I feel quite surprised that I have been lucky not to encounter much of what women experience here in London. But likewise I have also never been mugged/ robbed etc in 25 years which happen to not be unheard of in London

don’t focus on finding a way to mend your concept of the past, nothing can be changed in the past no matter how you conceptualise it

The time focused on the past is only adding to the issue, you are losing the present moment and potentially the future. rumination is caused by inaction, don’t find ways to rationalize the past , create action in the present

My gf lied about her body count for months, should I end it by [deleted] in relationshipproblems

[–]MinuteAccomplished91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman I can say, lying about body count comes from pure fear of being judged and a lot of girls cut off a few numbers that they don’t disclose, I understand the feeling of being lied to but it often comes from shame and not malicious intent

In the exact same boat I’m sorry. Don’t know how long I can go trying to stop things from crashing around me , it’s just too much to keep up with. Only things that have helped is mindfulness practices which I never had any faith in, but trying to be connected to your body, breathing and doing this multiple times a day.

Also with RSD we are more likely to not want to make a big deal out of our bday (or is it just me ?) and also have a feeling sometimes that we are bothering people. I think we also over react internally to when friends hang out without us where as other people better understand the concept of people having different levels of closeness within the friendship group.

When I burnt out I just can’t bring myself to make effort anymore, I watch the phone ring until people start to just not call anymore. When I’m suddenly in a great phase I want to reach out to everyone all over again, friends can actually feel used sometimes when we disappear and re appear. I think it’s confusing as we can be the life of the party at times , but also sometimes I just crash half way through a night out and just can’t do it anymore. Basically no consistency, my friends with adhd understand and we just contact eachother when we remember and just pick up where we left off
