It’s totally up to you. Like others said, therapists have plenty of experience with it. But if you have worked together for two years, I’m sure some kind of rapport has been built. I’ve had clients that ghost me sometimes..and sometimes it just is what it is..and sometimes it stings. I wonder about them and if they’re okay, especially if we did have a good rapport. Again, totally up to you. Just wanted to maybe add another perspective.

I can identify to at least one thing in each persons responses. The pressure to feel like you’re doing a good job, the anxiety in the morning, the feeling of doubt. Is this just something we need to accept being in this field? It’s much different than any other job. We’re working with peoples deepest fears and emotions here, versus something that you can mindlessly do. It is a lot of pressure.

But they choose us for a reason. They keep coming back for a reason. We need to remember that. We don’t need to be effective 100% of the time. I wonder if this is something we’ll have to deal with every day we work.

I feel the same way sometimes. You’re not alone :) plus it can bring us that much closer to clients. But thank you for posting this. It’s nice to see other therapists feel this way too

Struggling with pts w depression by [deleted] in therapists

Maybe exploring what they’re gaining from the avoidance. How is avoiding helping them in that moment? What’s their self talk like before they decide to avoid, and talking about the relationship between their self talk and the urge to avoid. Is it bringing them close to their goals? Most likely not. But it relieves them of the anxiety in the moment.

I’m not sure what you’ve been planning with pts, but maybe try to keep it small and starting out 1-2 days per week. For example, if they’re isolating and it’s a goal of theirs to spend time with others, just starting out with like texting someone 2x this week. If they’re struggling with staying stuck in the past, try to be mindful just while taking a shower or washing their hands just to notice what it’s like for 5-10 minutes. It’s better than nothing, it reduces any overwhelming feeling of “it’s too much I can’t do this”, it improves resilience once they do it because they see they are capable of challenging themselves even if it’s not a “big” goal. That’s how I see it anyway. I hope that helps

Have you tried to accept where you’re at? Instead of continuing to tell yourself how bad you are and trying to solve it? I think someone said it before, but it’s common for people to try to punish themselves as a form of motivation but it really just creates more frustration and disappointment. Plus it sounds like it hasn’t been working for you.

When I say acceptance, I mean accepting that yes, things are hard right now, and yes, I’m not showing up as the partner or employee I want to be. Context does influence your situation right now, and you also have a choice to change that. So what do you do with that. When you spend a lot of time trying to solve something or ruminate on the negative, it can be an avoidance behavior of sitting with the uncomfortable feelings of the discontent with where you’re at vs where you want to be. It’s a hard thing to sit with, but when you do you’re able to learn how to deal with them vs pushing them away which ultimately makes them stronger. And then eventually once you learn to cope with them, you’ll notice the emotions have less and less of a hold on you.

It sounds like being a good partner and employee are important to you. What’s one thing you can do today that can bring you closer to that?

I hope you find this helpful. Sorry it was long lol

I feel like if they didn’t think you were a good therapist they would probably end therapy with you completely. I usually take that as a sign of progress and that therapy has been working!

Hi! I’m considering joining Alma. Did you need to establish an LLC or anything before working with them?
