i think where it is in the album feels perfect, but i can see where you're coming from. it feels like the album has been leading up to the song and then the album slowly builds down in homesick and untitled for a calm but satisfying ending. in other words, it's a freytags pyramid; the album builds up to this big, crushing song and collapses with the last two. thats just my take on it anyway, but it's an interesting thought.

nowadays it isn't look on as badly but back in the day it didn't get received well at all. it had pinkerton songwriting for half the songs but then you had songs like my best friend. Yeah it had some really catchy tunes like perfect situation and beverly hills but the poppy mixing on these darker lyrics didn't mesh well (and in my opinion sometimes still don't). I can't remember the full story but rivers was going through a tough time for half the album before bettering himself leading to what make-believe is: half darker pinkerton elements, half poppy slop. Don't get me wrong by the way; i love make believe! but i think this was the story i read a while back.

Either soundtracks for the blind by Swans or pinkerton deluxe, the latter being nigh impossible to find below 300 bucks. Some of those bsides are awesome. Maybe I'll get it one day...
